Re: Tascam Dm-24
I had one for about a year. I only sold it because I did not seem to be doing as much digital stuff at the time. THe menus are confusing at first, but not nearly as perplexing as the manual makes them out to be. As far as the preamps, the newer version of software that came out when I still had them...

Re: DBX386 - any good? (or tell me what I should look at)
I recently sold my 386. I agree with the glassy description. Sometimes with the gain totally maxed, it sounded "ok" on distorted guitar, but not as good as just about any other low to mid priced pre that I've used. The digital outs seemed intriguing but I never used those, either.

Bass cabinet design
Hi, I'm thinking of building a 1 speaker bass cabinet to use when bands come in with sub-par bass rigs. I'm thinking of putting a Carvin 15" speaker in it ( http://www.carvin.com/products/single.php?ItemNumber=PS15E-4&CID=RSPK ) and I was just wondering if there are any specific things I need to kno...

Re: "mastering" question
I third that thanks, Alan. I have a new perspective on it now. I should add that for the mix in question, I was being rushed by the band and couldn't leave any time in between mixing and mastering. In the future, I realize that I should insist on waiting as if the sound really matters, we should all...

Re: "mastering" question
thanks everyone for the advice. turns out one of the things i'm working on is going to be mastered at west westside, so i'm going to try and stare at alan while he works. i've heard of a lot of people that master each other's work and i'm also going to pursue that route, but with the tips on this th...

Re: Replacement pick-ups for the Strat?
Some people think they're a little too fat but the SD Hotrails are my favorite and they're rather in expensive. They are quiet as heck noise wise and there also is a vintage rail that has slightly less gain if you want more of the guitar's "original sound."

Re: "mastering" question
Using the waves gold or platinum bundle: I will also De-ess across the two track if I have to, to keep the cymbals in check, and esses I guess sometimes. That is the only way to get some high end compression that approaches tape like results IMO, is to use a de-esser to lick the top off of a big tr...

Re: "mastering" question
Thanks a bunch, guys. So you wouldn't get in and do anything real serious with EQ? Sometimes I'd get frustrated from muddying up the mix and boost certain freq. ranges around 4k or 6.5k a heck of a lot. I guess a lot of the problem is you become committed to how the premastered mix sounds and are tr...

"mastering" question
Hi, This has probably been asked (though I did a search for it and didn't come up with the exact question, so)... The bands I record want their mixes loud, and I've learned all too well about destructive over-limiting in attempts to please clients. So my question is simple: How are some of you home-...

Re: GROHL DRUMS (queens of the stone age) DELICIOUS! let's t
i would have NEVER thought of tracking this way. i have, however, heard of doing the opposite and keeping the whole take - using triggers for the drums and real cymbals - to get mechanically tight kick and snare with real groove and feel. I believe it was also done on the Melvins' Houdini only I th...

Re: Beyerdynamic m160s as overheads
Thanks for all the info - especially the storage bit. I definitely was not aware of that one and would have hated to learn the hard way. Question about the 160s as room mics: I'm not used to using cardioid/hypercardioid mics as room mics. I've tried pointing a pair of cardioid ldc's at the opposite ...

Beyerdynamic m160s as overheads
Hi, I recently got a pair of beyer m160s and I'd like to use them as overheads. My only question is that I know for mic-ing something like guitar, the two red dots on the body are supposed to be vertical or else phase problems can result. How should I position the mics (dots and all) in relation to ...

Re: AKG c1000's as drum overheads
I had a pair for about a year. I really don't care for those mics at all. They're just harsh, shrill, etc. A few of the things that I did with them came out ok, but only in cases where the drummer had control and didn't bash the hell out of the cymbals.
