Re: RANT: "in your spare time.."

That's going to be the "new me". I'm going to start being very finite with booking mix tweaks and billing for them. Some tweaks, I might not feel right charging for, but if I am tying up billable studio time, I'm responsible for that and I need to charge the client for something. Electricity and ren...

New Barn Studio build out

I'm working on a new space in a barn and I'd like some advice and experiences from anyone that might have something to offer. Here are some photos of the space that I'm dealing with: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/18SJUpkp-MRkK7AJtBxfjuUz8eQ31j7wC?usp=sharing It the upper level of a mid-size...

RANT: "in your spare time.."

If I hear one more client ask for me to do something in my "spare time" I am going to throw an Alesis 3630 through a window. I believe "in your spare time" is code for "also for free" as well. The majority of my clients over the years have bee very respectful of the work I do and the time I put into...

Central MA Music Gear Purge/Yard Sale!

We're having a music gear yard sale this Saturday May 8 from 10-2pm at Wachusett Recording in Princeton MA. I'm trying to find new homes for a lot of gear that I've had in storage and haven't used in a while. If you've been searching for just the right insert cable, this is your chance! https://fb.m...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

. I debate on parting with the MicMix, Roger I sold mine years ago & still regret it. Never had an Orban, but it's definitely in a different category than the Furmans--more mannered & controlled than most spring verbs. The funny thing is that I always thought my MicMix did a great simulation of the...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

other Symetrix boxes, etc.... Roger If you're getting rid of a Symetrix 606, let me know. I might be interested. On another note, I am totally pro winnowing down the gear flock. It seems like for many (most?) of us, there will always be pieces that don't see much use but are either hard to replace ...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

Oh, and the Orban 111b spring reverb I'm probably keeping forever. I have one as well. Things like that are obvious keepers to me. I have a small collection of spring reverb units that I haven't been able to replace with plugins. Those are the sorts of things that can be inspirational and not just ...

Re: Isolating Vocals when Recording with DI Electric Guitar

SM7 probably wouldn't pick up as much picking . Can you hear it in the mix, or just when the vocal is solo'd? I was going to say this. The SM7B has been great in this setting for me. Any decent super-cardioid mic will help, especially if you're close to it. Like Recycled Brains asked, is it ruining...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

When I had a 501, I paid $60 for it. Totally worth it. I just checked reverb and they're anywhere from 200-400$ now. I wouldn't pay $200 for one. Only reason I bring it up, is because you mentioned easily buying another down the line if you decide you want one again. I'm seeing them (sold listings)...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

5 years? :D I usually make this evaluation about every 1-2 years. did I use it last year? Do I plan to use it this year? Is it just so cool that it doesn't matter and I'm going to keep it anyway? Or do I have some other sentimental attachment to it? and although I have never owned those particular ...

Re: Should it stay or should it go?

My 501 is still a loved box in my control room...... I've never loved the sound of something blown up through a plugin. This is the best reason to keep this stuff. I like the Symetrix for the same reason. I love the limiter in it. It can crush a bass and you don't even hear it breathing heavy. That...

Should it stay or should it go?

I'm going through a lot of unused gear that I've had in storage for a long time and planning to sell a bunch of it. Two pieces that I'm undecided about, I'd like to get your advice on whether I should keep them or pass them on. I have a pair of Ashly SC-50 compressors and a Symetrix 501 compressor/l...

Re: Sound Torque Podcast- with Joel Hamilton

Thanks for hipping me to this podcast! I loved the interview with Joel. What a smart, well-spoken, humble and talented guy! I've always had a ton of respect for him from his days being more active on this board. His thoughts about production and why we make the decisions we do were very fascinating ...

Re: Using tab to transient on analog tape bounces

I had a lot of problems the one time I tried to do this. Because the analog tape is constantly drifting in and out of sync and the motor was constantly, imperceivably fluttering (you don't notice it until you play it back against a digital recording that is not fluttering), I ended up abandoning my ...

Re: Recording Trends/Techniques that drive you nuts

I think I still have pixx from Soul Asylum tracking Grave Dancers Union there in 92. I was tuning guitars, and stealing techniques from Chris Shaw and Beinhorn. Those 87's up in that ceiling are in a coffin shaped wood recessed box, cause Bongiovi's Poppa ran the funeral parlors for the mob in nj. Gr...
