Re: Bose -- weird or not?

I blame Bose for starting the little speaker craze! I'm so fucking sick of little speakers that make a ton of hi's and weird blowy puffy base. Not one bose system makes tight bass. I miss the good ole days when men were men and bose was just a glimmer in some asswipes eye. You had to buy speakers......

It's awesome man. Really real and cool. Kinda different, but really familiar.

Re: Song I thought I'd share with you guys

Damn, that's harsh.

Anyway, I can't give you much of a critique but all I can say is keep it up. You sound pretty young so you probably have a long time to develop your recording skills. All it takes is practice and a love for it. You have the latter.

Re: mixing tips for straight forward R'N'R-punk (EQ or NOT?)

Seems like EQ is for fixing stuff. On the latest recording I did, I decided not to use any on the guitar and it's so much nicer to listen to than the one I fooled with. I would just leave it alone with maybe some low cut or something if it's stepping on toes. I would as a rule of thumb, try to stay ...

Re: when do YOU bottom-mic a snare?

Here's what I do and it may be a bad idea for other reasons since I'm a novice. I started out micing the bottom but didn't like it's character at all. Instead I put a small diaphram condensor behind the drummer's butt about 3 ft back and to the side so that it "sees" the kick beater. This mic catche...

Re: ISTRA's latest.

Man, I don't envy you having to record that kind of music. Not that there is anything wrong with it. It's just that it's so stylized and there is a certain way it should sound... if you aiming for that. It's a lot easier to just record the instruments the way they sound and see what happens with the...

Re: Please critique my recording... indie rock stuff

Yeah. We're playing the 10th, this Friday at Lennys.

www.theliverhearts.com has all the info.

Thanks for the ear thing. I was thinking that since I play in the band and I know what it sounds like when it's good maybe I could work the recording until it sounded similar.

Re: Please critique my recording... indie rock stuff

I agree about the drums. Somehow, in the mastering they got a little quieter and the guitars got louder. Oh well, pretty typical I guess. I think they're telecasters with traynor amps but don't quote me on that. I just play drums.

Thanks for listening.

Re: new dancer mixes

Sounds awesome man! Just one thing... I'm a drummer and I hate it when the toms are detatched from the kit... meaning the floor tom is panned way right and the rack tom is panned way left. It's just unnatural although about %80 of mixes I hear seem to do that. Sounds great though... Snare is a suffe...

Re: please critique this song

I was thinking about it on my walk from the office to the parking garage... about the panning thing. It's relative. What I mean by that is you have to take into consideration how the music will be listened to. Unfortunately, I do most of my listening in the car or on earphones. This exagerates the s...

Re: Please critique my recording... indie rock stuff

Thanks! I used a cheap chinese LDC for the vocals with some compression, eq, and a reverb plugin. One guitar has a sm57 on it and the other has the LDC and a CAD SDC. The drums were recorded with the same LDC as a single over head and the CAD mic pointing at my butt (I'm the drummer). SM57 on the sn...

Re: please review this song

It seems like I'm on my own here with this opinion judging by all the music I've heard lately but I think the stereo field is too wide. I go and see a lot of shows and I close my eyes and pay special attention to the staging. When I listen to stuff I like to do the same and I try to envision the ban...

Re: Your disc reviewed online

Some bands suck and they will jump at any chance to get press. This is for them. I think it's kind of funny myself. Maybe when my penis enlargement pills don't work I'll send these guys a disc to review to make me feel better. It's really just something for bands to put a link to on their site and t...

Re: Please critique my recording... indie rock stuff

Thanks man. I think that when we decided to record ourselves it was ambitious but we took our time (did it at least 4 times) and that's something we couldn't do in a studio. Some things I'd like to improve on in the future would be the bass tone (less middy mud) and the vocals. They are kinda thin a...

Re: 2 tunes, need critique.

Besides feeling like I was tripping due to the stereo madness, it sounded pretty nice. It's kinda hard to critique because of how experimental it is but nothing stood out to my novice ears. I couldn't suggest what to do besides maybe a little de-essing of the vocals.
