AKG K240's - old vs new

I just came across an old pair of 240's that had one side out. Otherwise they were still use-able... padding wasn't stiff nor was the plastic headband. So I figured I'd fix 'em. We used to have dozens of these in my first studio and I've repaired them way too many times. Anyway, I soldered them up, ...

My plan is to talk a talented drummer I know into being a guinea pig. Ha! It's pretty unbelievable that, with the number of posts you got, that only you (and Roscoe to a certain extent) were the only ones to address the absolute of the whole thing. You gotta have a great drummer! A great drummer (a...

Seeking turnkey studio in NYC

A client of mine is interested in taking over a recording studio in Brooklyn or lower Manhattan. The ideal situation would be turnkey, but a pre-built facility sans gear would work too. They're looking for what I would consider a class-A recording/mixing studio with a large live room, well-designed ...

Yeah, I've kept my Tiger startup drive with Pro Tools 7 for just this reason. I really like 8 but after installing it, I realized it was gonna cost me over $500 to make all my plugs compatible. (I've got NI Komplete, BFD, and Autotune 4). In fact, my IK Multimedia stuff (Amplitube 2, Ampeg SVX & T-R...

U87 diaphragm assembly wobbling

I pulled my U87 out of it's case this morning and noticed a very subtle "thump" inside it. When I hold it upside down and look at the diaphragm assembly from the side, I can see a noticeable "wobble" in it. I'm figuring a loose screw. Can I fix this myself? I had a new diaphragm installed by Neumann...

I've got a couple of the Auditronics channel strips that I haven't gotten around to racking. Any suggestions on doing so (or even a recommendation - I'm in NYC but could ship)? Is this a fully custom job or do these size boards have standard "pin-outs" allowing them to just be slipped into a pre-mad...

Need a NYC contractor familiar with sound proofing

I'm looking for referrals to a general building contractor who is familiar with sound-proofing options for a Manhattan club that I"m working with.

First hand experience with the referred would be a big plus.

I was a Turbo Mouse addict and still have mine connected for when I forget to charge my wireless but I gotta back the MX1000 too. You get really used to the form and the indispensable right-button. Plus it's got a great scroll wheel with side-scrolling (great for navigating the edit window in Pro To...

Giving the tracks to 100 different engineers, the mixes will be diverse, not the same. Yeah, but my final session might have no audio in a section where it was recorded (like, let's save all 6 rhythm guitar parts for the chorus, we only need 2 in the verse). I would just cut them out. One of those ...

Mix Engineers: importance of retaining session format?

I was recently sharing tips with a producer friend who is much more successful than I, and one thing that came up, when mixing someone else's material, was that he felt it very important not to mess with the regions in the session. The manifestation of his approach was using automated mutes on vocal...

Studio Owners: can you share a few startup/buyout costs?

I'm in the process of sketching out a ruff budget for a client of mine who is interested in building a new studio, probably in Brooklyn. I'm trying to convince them that buying an existing place could really be a great idea, if the proper one was available. I've got a good handle on a lot of the equ...

A "demo" is a recording of a song that you later spend thousands of dollars and hours of time trying to recapture the spirit of, only to get 90% there.

As a songwriter I've got to say that there is nothing more valuable to inspiration than having a bunch of your instruments plugged in and ready to go when a riff enters your head. Maybe even more useful than that is the ability to pickup my bass or keyboard and just jam without having to startup my ...
