Topic: Cascade Fathead on kick? Precautions?

Try angling the fathead down a bit when it's in front of the kick, so the air blast "sweeps" across the ribbon instead of blowing directly on it full-face. And definitely use a pop filter. Some higher-end ribbons (royer) come with a corrugated ribbon that is much more durable, but the fatheads do no...

Quicktime's info window (command - I) will tell you the bit and sample rate, I believe.

a) It's best to put a dither on the master bus (or wherever your output bus is) as the last insert, then bounce to 16 bit. Exporting a 24 bit file to 16 bit will only truncate the last couple of bits, and will not apply any dither. If you don't hear it, it's fine. You would only notice if you had lo...

Take the compressor off the main bus and turn everything down a bit.

I perform all of my loops in real-time, by attempting to play the same thing as I did in the last 4 bars. It mostly works out great.

The Radial stuff is all fantastic. They have a great site which will give you some more ideas about what DI's can do and help you decide whether one of their more specialty boxes would be right for you. I got a lot out of it when I was diving into the subject. Countryman is also great, so is anythin...

FWIW, I prefer the Belden 1192a matte finish to the Canare slight gloss feel. I usually get a couple hundred feet of star quad from one or the other spool. Great stuff!

I'll often pair a nice condenser with a favorite dynamic for vocals. Lately it's been an AudioTechnica 4050 with an AKG D320B dynamic coming in at 45 degrees from above. The mix is something like 100% condenser and 75% dynamic, and they're both sent through a linked bus compressor together. The cond...

re: fixing a couple of bars where the band slowed down, and they're playing without a click Easy! First, find a downbeat before the "bad section", and another downbeat after the bad section. Put markers at those spots (in sample mode). Turn on elastic time for that track, or those grouped tracks, or...

The fella who built Dave Gilmour's floating studio on the Astoria swears up down and sideways that the directionality of the cable makes a tangible difference. I can't remember the guy's name, but at a tech conference I attended he told us about spending weeks vetting different cables (in BOTH direc...

If your mix is either too mushy with reverb or too dry without it and you can't find a good middle ground, try sending a couple of tracks to a short, low-passed delay instead.

This can give you a great sense of space without so much reverb "clutter".

Topic: Where do you keep your mic stands?

I've thought about this solution, but haven't built it yet. The idea is to make a kind of "wine glass hanger" for the mic stands. On the ceiling, you'd build a kind of long flat box, with a slot down the middle so you could slide the mic stands one by one upside down into the hangar. Then you would ...

IANAfiremarshal, but AFAIK fiberglass doesn't burn. Cover it with flame-retardant-treated fabric and you should be golden, acoustically AND legally.

It's good. I've used it very sparingly for individual note nudges, and experimented with quantizing, too. Think of it as a series of pins (at the zero-crossings, i.e. starts of notes), connected by rubber bands that the audio lives on. You can place the pins yourself or have them auto-placed, and yo...
