These guys are the quintessential "meathead" rock band -- just a bunch of cliche guitar riffs, 4/4 meathead drum beats, and a crappy singer singing about nothing original. The only thing these clowns have going for them is that every other pop band is so bad that they can't even play their instrumen...

Re: Opening a studio....ADVICE PLEASE!!!!!
Success percentage? Probably pretty bleak if you're looking at it from purely a financial perspective. But, it could be a success on other levels even if you fail miserably financially, which is what the odds are. I'd say go for it, just for the experience sake. Personally, I think working for an "o...

I used to have a twin reissure, and I got rid of it. There are much better amps for recording. The twin has to get incredibly loud before it breaks up. I wouldn't even recommend that amp for gigs, unless you have a guitar with active pickups. I bought a little black Fender amp with one speaker (all ...

Here we go. I've listened to alot of stuff, even stuff i thought I wouldn't like because it's overtly political, but I've definitely gotten alot out of the 10 or so hours I've listened. I especially liked the Woody Guthrie and Leadbelly podcasts. But they're all worth listening to. http://www.folkwa...

I don't know if it's really generalizing. Those campout fiddle competition deals have a sort of ethos of technical masturbation about them. These dudes go all around the country playing these rehashed riffs as fast as they can, and any deviation from the predictable formula is frowned upon with this...

Yeah, that's what I noticed. I went to a bluegrass/Scottish fiddle campout deal, and took my National, and I found these guys weren't really into having alot of fun with music, or into playing other styles. They were pretty into the technical side of playing, even though their shit basically all sou...

Wow, we posted at the same time. I was referring to the previous thread. I love the sound of quiet vocals with a ton of gain applied during tracking, and mixing, and then a ton of compression... like an eryka badu type thing... I like the surreal quality you can get from super hyping small sounds.. ...

I was actually hoping you guys knew a bit about this. Anyway, I thought the Charlie Rose thing was sort of interesting, because the last thing they're going to talk about on a show that has heads of state and famous scholars is some tweaky little engineering thing (I wish they had been more specific...

I don't know. That T-bone (i think it's walker or something) was talking about the 50's or 60's so I assume he's just talking about alot of compression, and maybe a bit of eq. I heard Bon Scott sang through a 57 or something with like a 10:1 ratio of compression with about 10db of gain reduction. I ...

Making a quiet singer sound "loud"
I was watching Charlie Rose a couple of months back, and he was interviewing T.Bone something-or-other, a guy who produced a bunch of really well-known people. He recounted a story about how he was fascinated by technology because he saw an engineer make an incredibly soft-voiced Roy Orbison sound l...

I don't know. Try www.pricegrabber.com. I'd probably rather lose 10 or 15 dollars than have my blood pressure go up to dangerous levels because some clown tries to haggle with me over a couple of guitar picks when I'm buying 2 grand worth of shit. I've gotten some phenomenal deals there, but it's wi...

Extremely cool podcast
They just put a 28 part podcast on Smithsonian Folkways on itunes. I've gone through the first 8 or so podcasts, and they've gone through everything from Dylan to leadbelly to Les Paul, and I've got 20 more to go.
