Re: Automatic Mixers
Those automatic mixers are pretty funky when it comes to ducking. Some have a simple set-up with one master channel that ducks all the others, but some have a more complicated logic to them. For these, the last channel that senses signal above a certain threshold becomes the new master, ducking all ...

Re: soundcraft 200b problems
Wow, what a host of problems. I have one and have used it for years. Weird about the plugs, I'm going to have to pop mine open and take a look-see. The inards of the 200b are very accessable. I have had no issues ripping the entire thing apart and putting it back together. I've had the main section ...

Re: Is there a difference in sound from different direct box
Yes there will be a difference. Often DI boxes do bring up the level, but the primary purpose is to match the impedance between an instrument output to a mic or line input (if you don't know what this is, go learn about it and learn about it now). Many are passive and do not amplify the signal at al...

Re: strange question about recording phone messages.
I would say that you have an impedance mis-match going on. If the output from the answering machine is for headphones, and the input on the mbox is for line input (or microphone, but line would make it worse), it just isn't going to work. Get thee to a Radio-Shack and get a low-impedance to high-imp...

Yea! The Runaways. The queens of noise.
BTW, I think Joan is much hotter than Lita. Just prefer brunettes I guess.

Re: Aphex Compellor 320A
Thanks for the replies. The invisible compressor is more along the lines of what I'm looking for, and it sounds like the Aphex will fit the bill. What is the name of the band that Lita Ford, Joan Jett and someone else were in when they were 17/18? I would never be able to fall in love again if I had...

Aphex Compellor 320A
Does anyone have experience with this? The idea behind it sure is interesting, idiot proof, but is probably too good to be true. With the levelor part (a slow-slow-slow compressor) it seems designed to be more of a mix-buss compressor than anything else.
I'm sure interested. Any opinions?

Re: recording with 2 mics
Oops. I re-read your first post Brad24bit, and realized that you are not talking about live recording. I've got to finish my coffee before I start answering these things. Yes, do try recording like you have proposed. If you do want to do the Jecklin disk style go for it, but I would be more inclined...

Re: recording with 2 mics
I've done it in the past. I've tried to be all precious about it (matched pair of Schoeps, good mobile preams, etc) but it really doesn't work out well, mostly due to the horrible acoustics of the venues, crappy PA, and the distain/ignorance for tone most punk/H.C. bands have. However, I've found th...

Re: Cheap ass electric guitar thread
Kay can be super cool. I had one, it must have been only 5 lbs. Not a main axe, but for cool Tele-like, no sustain solos it killed. That and it cost $50. Fell over one day and the headstock flew in one direction and half the fretboad in the other. One suprisingly good one, if you can find them, is t...

Re: Passive vs. Acitve Monitors
I'm more inclined toward active monitors. Given my way of working, I have to be mobile. A power amp is just another thing to schlep around and take up space. Besides, the better active monitors have amps that are dedicated in design to their speakers and enclosures. All in all, it isn't a big deal t...

Re: Guitar amp output impedence question
In general, you can safely plug an speaker array (single, cabinet, whatever) into an output that is 1/2 to twice the impedance of the output of the amp. For example, you can safely connect an 8 ohm output to a speaker rated at 4 to 16 ohms. The only thing effected is the volume (the 4 ohm speaker wi...

Re: where do you buy your cable
Markertek seems to have good prices, but Have Inc http://www.haveinc.com/ was a wee bit cheaper for what I was ordering. I just got my shipment today (200 meters raw Canare star-quad cable, 100 loose connectors XLR and TRS Neutrik and some new brand). I will be making long and medium mic cables and ...

Heya Harrison, Man, you guys really kicked ass with the Wherehouse. That place was unbelievable (still could be, but it has been a couple of years since I've been out there). How about some other North Carolina voices. all night, the burning downs, face down in shit, mercury birds, good times....tho...
