I like drummer's perspective. It makes it easier to air drum!

Unless I'm sold on an acoustic, shaker, tamborine or some such being on the left then I'l usually put the hat opposite.

'Brighter', like 'louder', can very easily trick your ear into thinking it's hearing 'better'.
