Moving a mic around in front of a speaker for filtering didj + 57 for filter El cheapo cassete machine with an omni mic with a ludicrous, glacially slow limiter for distortion. DBX 163x for dynamics control Sometimes I move the record back and forth in time instead of just letting it play...variatio...

based on the mastering alone, this album should have gone multi-platinum. Poor Britney... In my world it's about as relevant as sales being down in toothpaste but I kinda wonder if the major label sales decline has something to do with quality of the corporate stuff. From the Top 20 today: F...

We don't seem to get self-recorders whose focus is outside the pop thing (e.g, not many hiphoppers here). I'm an emcee first, hip-hop producer/beatmaker second, and engineer third. I'm brand spankin' ass new here and I think it's awesome. I've never in my life been a part of anything remotely like ...

Re: HPF

Oh, and EQ is for the weak, I get my mix together by pumping individual elements through carefully selected and placed speakers in a good sounding room through a binaural mic to a modified 2" 2 track Studer. All the real pro's mix like that.

HPF
Hi pass filters are kind of a big deal too...try to find the fundamental frequencies of the instruments and roll off everything below. Or I guess if ear training is the topic of conversation: start by moving the frequency of a fairly steep HPF up until you hear where the actual bottom of the program...

vocal rides + time based fx
You might try automation of the lead vocal track to ensure that every single syllable is clear and at the right level. There's not a compressor on the market that can do that as well as a finger on a fader or even mouse-in' it in the box. Some compression/saturation might help though, too. You'll al...

doubling in Rap has gone entirely too far. God forbid anyone practices spitting a verse, and treats their delivery like a craft I don't really think that layering vocals is in conflict with craftsmanship. Most but not all rappers who record and perform professionally (including badass motherfuckers...

Doubling rap vocals
I'm especially curious about what people are doing as far as layers with rap. Seems like many experienced rappers walk in to the booth knowing exactly what they're going to do with each of the 5 tracks they asked for (i.e. main, double, stereo selective double, adlib). Not so much with rappers who a...

Ummm...Nebraska
I realize Bruce Springsteen's not exactly the hippest guy at the average TapeOper's dream party , but Nebraska's pretty damn good. Better than any of the big money E Street stuff at capturing his raw emotional power in spite of the awful room sound, wonder if there's a connection....

+1 La3a on guitars
It's kind of like the Sam Adams of mixing guitars if you know what I mean.
