Yeah, I've flown with mics and even cables, and its a non-issue, just be prepared to show them at security. I make sure to tell the TSA person working, and pull them out like I do my laptop. If you're polite and open with them, there is usually no major hassle. One of them explained to me that it wa...

So, since the record turns at a constant rate, you get higher quality at the outside edge of the record. The vinyl at the outside edge moves past the needle at a higher rate, providing more information per second than it does near the center. So basically, sure, you might be able to fit more than 22...

Old house/studio mate of mine had one a friend had made him. It was as simple as could be - just wired directly to an XLR. One caveat is that it needs a voltage on the line - ie phantom power. The voltage on a phone like is something more akin to 10V than 48V, so w phantom on, it sounds really blown...

RE: modded 57 on vocals
I'll vouch for the modded 57 on vocals. Need the right pre, and a fair bit of gain. I found that too much gain can cause some noise, but that might have been more a function of the pre (an ART Digital MPA) than the mic. Its kind of somewhere between a 57/58 and an SM7 in sound. Works great for the r...

or you could just back off the mic a bit. bright mics work well from distance i find, as long as the room sounds nice. screen mods, as i understand it, tend to deal with really HF stuff, prevent smearing there. as only the HF material bounces around those cages. i really didnt hear that much of a d...

right out of the gate, 1a sounded crazy peaky to me. like OUCH. 1b sounded smoother. but then when i listened back and forth, the difference seemed less dramatic. i think i was just SHOCKED at first listen. basically, for solo acoustic i would probably never use a mic like this. but i could see thi...

A simple XLR Y-cable will work 99.99% of the time. Go for it. Yup, unless you need to run phantom from one of the split ends. You can get some crap then, and might get some phantom running back down the other side of the y. Or at least that's the idea. There's a reason they make splitter boxes with...

So like a few people have mentioned doing, I ripped out the two inner layers of screens on one of my 990s. I figured I would see how it compared to the unmodded mic, and while I was at it, I figured I'd share what I found. They were placed on a stereo bar as close to coincident as I could get them, ...

I think they make great, inexpensive drum overheads. That's where I've used my 990s the most, although not in a while. I've used them on acoustic guitar and vocals with some decent results, too. Monkey around with placement, and a pop screen for vox, and you can get some perfectly serviceable resul...

Maybe do them in M/S but real close? This strikes me as a good idea, but not TOO close. Too close and you loose some of the authenticity of the strings, which is precisely the reason you're tracking some real strings to augment the synth ones. You need some ambience to capture the tone of stringed ...

Don't know about those mics, but I love the Green Bullet. Use it micing a guitar amp, for a cool mid-range snarly guitar solo. I've also used it for lead vocals. Definitely a particular sound, but works for the right tune. All the vocals for this were done with one of those: http://michigansoundserv...

Stereo pair (ORTF, XY, MS, whatever), and play with the position until it sounds good. Hopefully they have a decent-sounding room. Just whatever you do, don't mic under the lid, near the hammers. It generally sounds like an electric piano if you do that. Actually, doing that (sometimes you have to i...
