Re: Any reggae heads?

I like the 70s stuff a lot. Lately it's been SATTA MASAGANA by the Abyssinians, REAL ENEMY by the Mighty Diamonds (later, uneven but tight), and for a sec I was into IN THE LIGHT by Horace Andy, but the CD was mastered by cretins (or else the source wasn't good). And of course various Scratch Perry ...

Re: I am Rodney King

Good thread. What's strange to me is that some of the people going off now have been on the board awhile and seemed to know how to behave here, but then those people . . . changed. I found the "Go fuck your mother" thing 'way over the top, although less so than the Eva Manley stalking of days gone b...

Re: is Athlon XP shitty?

I personally have a Dell dimension and it works great -- very quiet, cheap, and returnable if you don't get it to work. I use it with a layla 24 (which was kind of a bitch to get to work right -- but works great now), with Sonar 2.2 , Cubase Sx, and Nuendo 1.61. Hardly ever crashes. Stilla: Can you...

Everything I own isn't worth $80,000.

Are we sure this guy's a teenager? Look closely at that picture . . .

Re: Gefell UM70s

Thanks for the tips, God.

Mike -- I think it's actually the same capsule as the U47, not the 87. You can get Gefells on e-bay every so often.

Gefell UM70s

It looks like one of these is coming into my life soon.

I've heard good things, but can anyone tell me more about how they use 'em, & what their strengths and weaknesses are? Thanks . . .

Re: Bonehead Newbie Otari MX5050 Question..

. . . on the front of the machine, it has 4 1/4" mic level inputs. So you can run a mic directly into the 1/4" jack (with an Male XLR to 1/4" adapter) and boost the signal with the "mic" trim knob. Not all 5050s have the mic pres built in like that. I got the same 4 track you have, and loved it . T...

I sure am enjoying this thread. Bartender! Another of the same.

Re: Bonehead Newbie Otari MX5050 Question..

I wouldn't sweat rewiring your XLR cables at this point. If all your cables are the same there shouldn't be any problems. I'm curious -- what do you mean? My 5050 came with snakes, so I haven't had to deal with this issue, but my understanding is that the pin assignments on the Otari's XLR jacks ar...

Re the original question about scholarships, my school recommends this site as a place to look, if you haven't already:

http://www.fastweb.com

Whether there's audio-specific stuff there, i don't know.

Interesting that after all the heavy front end stuff -- Neve, SSL, Studer -- he masters straight to DAT.

Re: Bonehead Newbie Otari MX5050 Question..

Other things to know about the 5050: 1. Last I heard, Otari tech support in California still answers questions about 'em. 2. They will also sell you a manual, although it ain't cheap -- $60-70??? 3. Otari wired their XLR jacks differently (which of the three pins does what). You may need to modify y...

I read in TAPE OP you can make your own threads. It's probably a lot of soldering though.
