Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

It looks like stuff in this region gets cleaner. 4-5-21 Rfx80 all cover wf.jpg Are some of those tails drums ringing along? One thing you've never really stated: what's your goal? Do you want a great live music room, or a super accurate control room? Something in between? As MSE said, they're kinda ...

Re: Sizing a PA for a Small Theater

A year into a pandemic might be a good time to go hunting for a large PA system. I see a ballroom of similar size near me clearing out their system for peanuts, and a lot of bargains on big PA stuff on CL. Nobody's played a gig in a year and want to get some value out of the gear. to the OP: Is the ...

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

So here are a couple plots of my WIP room. The room is maybe 23' deep, 11.5' wide and 10.8' tall. The initial treatment was a simple drop ceiling cloud - bare drywall walls, cement floor. The treatment it's received are rockwool filling the cavity above the drop ceiling, and wall panels of 4" 703, w...

Re: monitor stands

I've been through every DIY combo around. Stacked cinder/breeze block, PVC, threaded steel pipe. And mediocre-to-modest commercial stuff...some flimsy QuikLoks that might as we have been spring loaded, a set of mid-grade Target stands. Having just upgraded to some monster monitors, I needed appropri...

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

40 hz ringing for over a second? That's the textbook definition of mud! It'll be easier to compare the before/after if the relative size of each axis is scaled the same, and the peaks fall on the same places. If the newer plots are 5 dB hotter, then everything is 5 dB higher. If you rescale the new ...

Re: The Truth Hurts - REW and my room...

That's what frequency response looks like, even in pretty good rooms. Use the psychoacoustic smoothing if you want it to look flatter :D It doesn't look like you've got a hole around 100, you've got plateaus at 150-350 and 40-60, if you extrapolate the flat bit from 600 to 10K. You can clearly see y...

Re: Differences in monitoring: mix rooms vs mastering suites

There's a DBX 480M on ebay for $100...it's actually an Earthworks M30 with a different nametag. That's a steal!

(The newer DBX RTA-M is also a fine mic, just not an Earthworks.)

Re: Differences in monitoring: mix rooms vs mastering suites

The DBX is pretty good, about $100, and from a trustworthy company. The Dayton and Sonarworks are similarly priced, but I've got no experience with them...I believe they both include calibration data, also. The Dayton is recommended by the REW folks. Personally, I steer clear of the Beh & Nady optio...

Is that a better or worse fate than being bought by Gibson?

Re: Hearing Imbalance

I'm skeptical of ear candling. As is the FDA . I have allergies that leave my inner ears congested sometimes, sometimes only one, leading to a big imbalance. I can't really mix in that condition, and probably shouldn't drive. Between an ENT and an allergist, it can be managed...the blue Flonase see...

Re: Reference mixtape

You'll have to let us know if anything else from these lists is useful, or if you've got some of your own contributions to add.

It's been a quest for the last year or two to find references that
A> Sound really good or are especially revealing
B> The songs aren't too tedious to listen to

Re: Reference mixtape

I've been going through this myself, with both new monitors and a new room under construction. Some old standbys - some are single tracks, some are whole albums. Massive Attack - Karmacoma - when the super lows are murky, the bassline is a jumbled mess. It takes a heck of a room for that line to wor...
