Re: Two comps, one vocal
I usually use an 1176 4:1, fast attack, fast release, never grabbing more than 3dB, then Retro Sta-Level on slow attack, fast release, never grabbing more than 3dB, and it always sounds great. I make adjustments for unusual singers, but that is the usual. Ha! me too! Purple MC77 to Retro Sta Works ...

I enjoy ribbons on Banjo all the time. Proximity can be difficult, having a faster compressor will allow you to nail down those laser beams they call banjo notes. Enough distance in a good room can sound fantastic, to much distance in a bad room can make things worse. Chains that have worked for me....

Reamping is better in my opinion. I've tried it both ways with an Echoplex EP4. There haven't been any instances yet where I've preferred not using a reamp when interfacing low Z stuff with high Z. For anyone's reference who hasn't seen this before, go here: http://www.jensen-transformers.com/apps_...

Fulltone Tape Echo in Mix "Re-Amp?"
Going to have one of these in for a mix coming up, and would normally assume that it would require a Re-Amping device to match impedance. Has anyone been able to do this without the reamp process? I've noticed some pedals/devices actually do ok without. Like I have a Moogerfooger LPF that does ok wi...

'People not choosing 1073 style pres for overheads' why?
I may be going crazy here, but I have seen a recent trend of people choseing not to use 1073 style pre-amps on overheads, and cymbal tracks. Is it because of thier tendency to saturate at hotter levels? Or maybe the transient speed doesn?t lend well to that ?Open? sound? (whatever that means to you)...

When mentioning all around vocal mics it's hard not consider a modular capsule design. In your price range you could get a Blue Bottle Rocket Stage 1 (Solid State) or Stage 2 (Tube) then add capsules as you can afford them. For a single mic, I would recommend the AKG 414 XLS, or even better find a u...

Hey Deakin, I?ve been using a Toft ATB16 v2 for about 2 years now. To address your main question first, the Preamps can be a little on the dark side, but for most things I think they sound great. I have some API?s, Neve, and some M series UA stuff, but I still use the Toft preamps on Overheads becau...

.... the sound "cleared" up, but the change wasn't as drastic as say going from the Mackie pres to a Neve 1073....I was expecting a Wow moment when I recorded with the API's, and I didn't get it. Funny I had that WOW moment with the API's, less so with the 1073's This however points to source and m...
