First thing I'd look at would be the Waves Gold bundle. That'll get you a good selection of compressors and EQs, a couple of other nice-to-have plugins, and Waves doesn't require an iLok anymore. Then, I'd add the CLA Classic Compressors bundle, 'cause those are great to have for your LA-2A and 1176...

I wonder about that logic. Because the current line has been around for a while, that also means it's the most thoroughly tested. All the little kinks that inevitably appear in a new line have been ironed out in small revisions. This might be the best time to buy if you want a stable machine that w...

Unless you really need something now and can't wait, don't buy a Mac right now. The whole line is going to be revised in the next couple of months due to Intel releasing the new "Ivy Bridge" chips. This is a good site to check out before buying a Mac: http://buyersguide.macrumors.com/ You'll notice ...

I'm in the old digital realm of Pro Tools 6.4 TDM...It still compatible with newer session files. Actually, no it's not. Pro Tools 10 introduced a new file format (PTX) that's incompatible with earlier versions of Pro Tools. I was reminded of this the hard way when one of my clients took a session ...

I should also mention the other side of the coin: people who cling to very old software because, "hey, it still works". That may be true, but you might also be missing some really cool and useful features in the newer versions. Even worse, when you're outside of the manufacturer's support window, yo...

Impossible to answer, because it depends on the software you want to use. You have to go by the software manufacturer's compatibility list. Having said that, if you're one major version back, you should be pretty safe. I think just about anything will run on Snow Leopard by now. It also depends on h...

I got it last night, and after playing with it today, I feel pretty comfortable saying that it's much less necessary than the jump from PT8 to PT9. That was huge, and worth every penny, 'cause it fixed many of the glaring problems. With PT10, yeah, there's some cool stuff, but no "gotta-have-it" fea...

Put a trim plugin on all the tracks you want to lower. That way you don't have to touch the faders or automation.

I upgraded the four Macs in the house, but no way in hell am I touching my recording computer. I don't play around with the shiny newness on that one. Anyway, I'm running Pro Tools, and I know for certain it's not compatible. If history is any indication, it'll be several months or more before there...

I never use low-latency monitoring, I just set the buffer at 64 when tracking. I've tried 32, but I get errors at that setting, so 64 it is for me. It's rare that people complain about (or notice) latency at that setting. I can tell, but it's low enough that it doesn't bother me. I'm running a stock...

So, yes, important to other engineers. Absolutely. If I was looking to make my gear available to other engineers, I would have never asked the question. But I'm a small operation, not the kind of thing a traveling engineer is going to be considering. I was more curious if your regular clients -- tha...

Re: Web Site Gear List -- Does It Matter?

...most gear lists are out of date etc... Being anal retentive about detail and having a fair degree of skill with web programming means that my gear list is always current. BTW, note that I said "web programming", not "web design". I know my site ain't much to look at, but the code sure is p...

Web Site Gear List -- Does It Matter?

I got to thinking about the ubiquitous gear list that most studio web sites (including mine) have. Does anyone really care, aside from other engineers? I suppose it doesn't hurt to have it there, but does it ever help? I can't think of a single instance in all the years I've been recording people th...
