This is a reconstruction error. Pro Tools meters are inaccurate and don't catch these errors.

It is the main reason why you want to record digital signals well below 0dbfs

Read about it here...

it sounds like you have two issues at work... one is arrangement and the other is mix... the two are SO intertwined and the concepts for each are far-ranging and complex. But in a mix, I personally prefer to fix things before they get to the master bus. And a rule of thumb, mixing in digital it's us...

A few older albums that I have recently revisited that still sounds pretty cool... Joe Henry - Fuse I think T Bone Burnett produced this one and Daniel Lanois had a hand in mixing it. It has such a great vibe, sound and mood. Incredibly dark, moody and smoky sounding without being cheesy even a litt...

Don't know about ani or rufus, but as for Feist, I recorded her playing live twice. Once about a year and half ago and the most recently when the Reminder came out. I hadn't heard the record yet when I tracked and mixed the show. But her players are just SO tight and spot on...When I heard the album...

The ISA428 is a pretty decent converter and pre amp. A bit on the pricey side, but at a cost per channel basis, it's still a good deal. The converter upgrade for the 428 is pretty much the same converter found in a digi 192. Which is a far better converter than the 002, but not as nice as the Apogee...

the 4110 (pictured above) is a totally different pre. I don't really dig it quite as much as the 2108. (We have a set of those here at the studio too...and I find myself using the 4110's a lot less than the 2108) The 4110 has some extra features, like a voicing switch, which is cool and it changes t...

The Chameleon 7602 is pretty good... I think they go for about 400 bucks... but that may be without a power supply. Great pre for the money though... includes an eq that is very useful for certain applications (bass in particular) It's a really great snare pre too... a little bit crunchier than an a...

I'd go for the audix d2 and d4, if you can't afford the 421.

For overheads, I'd also look into the Shure SM81... they're often a standard mic for live work

Also a lot depends on the type of music you're recording.

We have 8 channels of them at the studio here and I think they sound really great on drums. Very fast transient response, similar to some API pres without as much of the growl that they can get.

They also have a really well designed power supply that makes them extremely quiet.

A few things I've observed: The RE20 appears on Thom Yorke's vocals in some of Radiohead's most recent webcasts. The sm7 shows up in Metallica's "Some kind of monster" documentary (sans windscreen). The Von Bondies also used one of them on parts of Pawn Shoppe Heart. (at least during basic tracking)...

Consolidate and export is the way to go. Also, make sure to do so from the same starting point for all the files. Export them all as multiple mono wav files (most likely) at the same bit depth and sample rate. Looks like you got to do the fun part (tracking) anyway... at least you're working with pe...
