just FYI the block diagram for my 1202-VLZ indicates that in the post-VLZ world, the line-in's still run (unavoidably) through the preamp.

sony is supposedly making improvements to the ATRAC codec to support their upcoming Hi-MD technology. it still won't hold a match to 24/96 but (keeping the original topic in mind) does this make a stronger case for [Hi-]MD's over portable DAT's? Is it common to use stereo mic's in field recording? Imaging is, of course, important to me and it would be great to have that option. Any ideas?
