How far are the mics from the kit? How much are they splayed apart?

ABOUT a foot above the crash cymbals - about 4 ft apart

Remember the 3:1 rule if you are using a spaced pair.

there's no phase problems.

pad the overheads? 451s

i am recording drums using 451's as overheads - is there a benifit to using the -10 pad?

also - i am having a hard time hearing the difference between the 2 mics - they are about 4 ft apart but sound like the same mic in the mix.

thoughts?

i already have a geat river 1mv, a vintech 1272 and a chandler tg2 so at this point i am looking to add more channels and possibly something that is a little cleaner than the above mentioned pres for acoustic sources and a different vocal character but still keeping things fairly big overall. i do l...

i started out with a rode NT2 and have gone a long way with it - it's great on all kinds of sources - from lead vocals to acoustic guitars - electrics - great room mic on drums - front of kick - percussion - organ. all around a lot of bang for your buck, very versatile - has a pad, high pass filter ...

isa428 vs. RNP

thoughts? does the isa428 have any color or is it pretty neutral? i need some more pres and can't afford to go too boutique with it but i want to be able to get some big sounds. i like the option of the onboard filters and impedance - i don't need the a/d converters. since i record digital i like a ...

i have been loving the transformer based pres- they are so big sounding and give the tracks so much more girth and weight.

but they're really expensive! (for me anyways).

i have a great river ME-1NV, a vintech 1272 and a chandler tg2 and the drums are sounding enormous with them.

any problems with interference from wireless keyboards?

i got a wireless keyboard and mouse but am leary to set them up in case they produce any interference - anybody know if that happens or not? (you know the way cell phones cause that annoying beeping) - let me know.

it would be cool to have it hooked up if it's no problem.

Re: using autotune wisely

you can't just draw in straight lines - no one sounds like that. it sounds almost as bad as auto mode. after you work with it a while you start to really hear it. instead: in the graphic mode there is a button called "track" or "detect" down on the bottom left and it will create a line which exactly...

Re: Why do you like Protools so much? [vs. other software]

i thought i would jump in and give my 2 bits here being a PC nuendo user. i am sure that the higher end versions of ptools are amazing but it seems to me that the LE version (which most people i know use in their home/project studios, usually with digi 001s) is really limited. maybe it was a lack of...

Re: Hail to the thief

john leckie produced the bends and it was mixed at fort apache by those guys i read about in tape op. i think nigel was their live sound guy who became their producer? i don't know. i like the new album but at times it feels a little too melodramatic and dreary (and i really like stuff like that!). ...

Re: guitar cab mic???

i am a big fan of using my rode nt2 a few feet back or even across the room depending on what we are going for. often used in conjunction with a 57 close up but i did read andy hong's review and it prompted me to pick up a used c1000 which i haven't had a chance to try out yet but his guitar sounds ...
