Re: New Orleans style horn section

For New Orleans, it's usually gonna be tuba, trumpet, trombone, then sax or clarinet. For soul, it's gonna be saxes and trumpets, MAYBE trombone. You can make whatever else work, but that's the basic "traditional" thing. I know a pretty great tuba and trombone player, so I would hire her, a trumpet ...

Re: Rugs: 1 big one VS. a few smaller ones

I bought a few rugs for my live room (31x23) two years ago. I got two fairly big ones (8x11 maybe) and three slightly smaller ones (4x6 or so). I wish I'd just gone with all smaller ones as it would have allowed me more flexibility and frankly, more options. Not so much sonically, but just placement...

Re: Recording Mac in 2019

Mitch Easter has been using Minis in two of his three rooms for years. The main computer at The Fidelitorium is a mini that he got two years ago.

Re: transparent 500 series pre

The Buzz Elixirs are worth looking at. New, they're over $500, but no one ever talks about them so you can frequently get good deals on them on eBay or Reverb. I have three of them. They have a transformer that's intended to beef up the bottom end, but it's not a "Neve-like" bottom or anything. To m...

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

Then if you buy one, they always seem to send another coupon (usually for $25 off). so don't buy more than one at a time. :D Also, this. Two other things to know: If they have a monthly sale code, sometimes you can use that code more than once. Not always, but sometimes. Also, whenever you install ...

Re: UAD 3 Plugins Pack - Which would you choose?

Get the three most expensive ones in which you are remotely interested. They have sales all the time and send out coupons frequently, so you'll be able to find deals on the less expensive ones that you'll use frequently with relative ease. When I got my first system and got to choose three, I went w...

Re: The Bad Plus

LOVE them! They kinda lost me when they started working with that vocalist, but otherwise, brilliant. I got hooked on them from The Happy Apples, right around the time that first album came out.

I would definitely say artificial reverb. Chamber or plate.

Re: Plug in for Leslie effect...

The free one that comes with Protools has some really good capabilities. I've got 2 actual Leslies at my place and I still use that plugin often. Yeah, the new one that comes with PT12 is pretty terrific. Like, surprisingly so. So are some of the reverbs and guitar pedals. Chris Garges Charlotte, NC

Re: Redux: Condensers on toms

I've used almost all the ones you've mentioned. Oktavas were my favorites in my own collection for about 15 years. I got the ATM450s when they came out and I do like them, but I do also generally prefer the MC012s (especially with hypercardioid caps) when I have the space to put them around the kit....

Re: Distressor Plugins

lysander, which one? the dc8c or the mjuc? i have both, just got the mjuc based on reading lots of raves, and it must be me but i can't really get with it. maybe i just need to spend more time with it. The MJUC could not be further from a Distressor/Arouser in terms of compressor action and to some...

Re: Preamps: Presonus M80 WITHOUT Jensens vs Mackie 1604VLZ

The Presonus will sound totally fine and it will give you individual phantom power, polarity reverse, individual outs, AND a mix buss. Mine has the transformers in it (and so does another one I've used) and those sound GREAT, but I'd be shocked and amazed if the transformerless ones don't sound ever...

Re: Distressor Plugins

The Arouser is GREAT! I have four hardware Distressors. I bought my first one in 1998. I know these units VERY well. The Arouser is built by the guy who designed the Distressor. I mean, how much closer do you need it to be? Is it EXACTLY the same? No, but it does all the same cool stuff and even mor...

Re: Quantum 128 Mixing board. Any other Quantum owners?

The early REM recordings. (original "Radio Free Europe" single and "Chronic Town" EP) were done on a Quantum that Mitch Easter had before getting his Amek. There's a pretty substantial "early REM" thread on here form a few years ago where I got Mitch to give some pretty heavy answers about those rec...

Re: Dynamic EQ Plugins

I have the Brainworx and it's really cool, but it's a little finicky sometimes. I got turned on to the Tokyo Dawn Nova not too long ago and I've been using it A TON in the four-band mode (not always using all four bands). It's got a GREAT display that really helps you zone in on problem stuff quickl...
