JJ, I love the idea that a measure of credibility is the gear one owns. Does that mean a gut who works exclusively ITB can never have a valid opinion on compression or do plugins count - I have 1176 as plugins. If this is not a joke and it's really important to you, I can tell you that I did have a ...

If you want to look tough, align to +3 . then you'll sound tough to. I think the term "tape compression" is an unfortunate one. Tape has a sound whether you hit it hard enough to run into it's Maximum Output Level (MOL) or not. Somehow it seems to me that people need to have a name for that sound, a...

This is the perfect scenario for the technique in the current tape op. Here's an backwards example. You compress it and it sound good on certain hit, let's say you've optimied for the louder hits. the problem is the soft ones are still too soft and the don't get the extra attack because they're not ...

Between Joel making me friggin' laugh my head off (as he always does)... and Jim Dickinson, Don Zientara, and Mark Rubel making me cry (seriously, I was fighting back tears by the time Mark stopped talking), there were so many inspiring stat...

"15ips is the sound of the '70s and 30ips is the sound fo the '80s." - Tony Visconti

If youre really want to duplicate the sound of the '70s adding tape to the above suggestions would go a long way if it's an option.

SOme people are saying buss compressor and some a are saying limiter. While a device may do either, I think the idea of mixing with "limiting" is crazy. You're either going to quickly get mislead and have way too much early on and get accusomted to to it, turn down the conlsoe output to a low volume...

Re: AES update

Roman, you crack me up.

I was so excited to check my article out and got totally distracted by your Lanois piece. Completely fascinating. I totaly want to meet him.

If that piece was a hack job, keep hacking.

Good meeting you at the party. I hope I wasn't too much of a drunken ass.
