Re: Sounds of the 90s
What about Beck and all his crummy imitators? Beck has actually worn well over the years, and his more recent stuff isn't sonically tethered to Odelay. It's the imitators I worry about. Remember how Odelay was on every critic's top ten list the year it came out? When was the last time you listened t...

Re: Dictaphone heaven
Okay, so it's not digital. I just reread your post. Anybody with experience with the digital dictaphones?

Re: Dictaphone heaven
Amen sir. I don't have a dictaphone per se but I know the bug that's bitten you. I have had similarly pleasant results with a cassette recorder with built in mic. Now a question: Are you using a digital dictaphone? An Olympus perhaps? The reason I ask is, some of those have USB hookup so you can dra...

Re: HELP, MIX'S THIN AS A DIME
Sir- On some of those thready mixes when I used to use a VS-840 (and it seems like everybody here used to have a VS-840) I got good results by dumping mono tracks to a consumer cassette deck and then dumping them back into the VS. You could do this for drums/bass (possibly as a stereo pair) and the ...

Re: Pissin Out a Rock
So, like most things in life, the sound wave kidney stone attack method is not as good as it initially seems -
so much for that one. Sounds miserable.

Re: Pissin Out a Rock
There's research regarding the use of high energy sound waves to crumble kidney stones right there in the kidney/ureters, which would be mighty nice. Kind of like ultra-ultrasound.
Maybe if you can just find the right frequency and aim it at the ailing flank via very loud power amps, etc.

Re: Classic recordings that are out of tune
Isn't it true that Bob Dylan sped up the entire "Blood on the Tracks" album by a half step during the mastering? Not out of tune, but a variation on that theme.
Nobody dislikes Blood on the Tracks, right? Unless it's your own blood?

Re: Pro Tools Free
The mystery continues: It works in firefox OR IE, cookies or no cookies, but only if you click on the very link in the post about halfway down the 2nd page of this thread. If you retype the link in the url line on your browser it won't work. I have tried it on a few computers and even went all the w...

Re: The Name of This Band Is Talking Heads
Ah, but you should hear some old FM or soundboard live tapes that make the rounds at some of the jammer band trading sites; a lot of those old (late 1970s) Talking Heads performances were pretty choppy, especially with dreadful variations in tempo (which I attribute to JV drumming) Great enthusiasm ...

Re: Pro Tools Free
Rigsby's link seems okay to me. Maybe you're seeing a cached version of something on your own 'puter. 16 more hours now go get ahold of that puppy! My complaints about Tracktion are only trivial, like the MIDI sync problem (to be corrected in the for-pay update) and the rather ghastly, gloomy skin c...

Re: I need some new music to listen to...
Everybody should witness the website of the Minneapolis "dyptich": www.brother-and-sister.com I have not yet observed them in action but the photos and mp3 at their website demonstrate that they are on the cutting edge of ... something ... They seem to play about every four months. I don't think the...

Any Suzuki Method former scholars out there?
Am I the only Suzuki Method trainee around here? For those who don't know, it's a method of music teaching to little tiny kids; it's all based on ear training and repetition with very little concern about reading music. Usually the kid starts on violin and then migrates to some other axe. It's very ...

Re: Monitoring a MIDI input in Tracktion on os x
Sir-
Did you drag a synth "filter" into the selected track? Or, further upstream, did you assign the MIDI device input to a particular track? Try those particular things.
Enjoy, etc.

Re: really good bands who don't perform
Regarding Christopher Cross: I actually SHOULD know what he looks like, but it's been a long time. My sister and I attended his concert at the local bible college in the late 1970s/early 1980s with our babysitter. I slept through most of the show. Very soothing. And, you're right: Now I can't rememb...
