Inexpensive monitors that do their job are thay out there?

Does anyone know of this new line of mixers by mackie? I'm thinking of getting the "1604" (I think thats the name) for my studio. It's this or the Hamptone. More pre-amps for the buck you know. Someone save me! Before I waste vital time and money.

I'm in the market to by a hamptone DIY kit. I'm wondering how many of you out there own one of these pre amps? is it worth it? and is the diffculty of assembly high for I am a novice?

I'm looking for a mixer with decent pres that won't kill me price wise. If any of you know of any cheap mixers that have made sounds to your liking direct me please.
