I think everyone here should send him one piece of audio gear . . . The $100 condenser mic that sounds bad on everything, the broke Behringer effects box that's propping open the door to the basement . . . Each one a step toward making a dream come true. To start this off right, I pledge an sm57 wit...

Re: Recommend a substitute for waves renaissance bass plug?
Yeah, that was why I (reluctantly) caved in and paid them -- that plug is a real simple way to solve a recurring problem.Marc Alan Goodman wrote: It's one of the only waves plugins I actually miss. Maybe the only one.
Thanks again to everyone for their thoughts!

What if you went beyond baffling around the amps (as suggested above), and built a little "house" around the guitar amp and amp mic? Then DI the bass. DI'ing admittedly means you'd have to track with headphones, or at least with one headphone on the ear and one off. By isolating the other noisy thin...

I would try the good online vendors like B&H Photo or Full Compass -- WITHOUT lying about what you're doing. Make it clear that you've done your research on the item and will put down the full price up front, and pay shipping back to them if you don't like it. Someone will work with you -- worst cas...

Personally, with my home recorder-grade mic's, the AKG C1000 really crunches up in a bad way in a final mp3. There are those who hate this mic in any format, I know, but I've wondered whether different mic's hold up better to compression. I wonder sometimes about how compression in general relates ...

I think that the point that Justin is making is that while you can consider many listener variables, you cannot account for them all in your work. I think that you should do what's always been done in mixing: get to know your monitoring setup, and make the best sounding mixes you possibly can. Once...

Answering the original question purely as a MUSIC CONSUMER: I'm much more likely to buy a $10 - $12 CD, unless I've already heard a chunk of the album and been blown away (the "what album is THAT?" moment). $15 would usually be a dealbreaker, with or without extras. Not saying $15 isn't fair, just t...

I'm not claiming to have golden ears when it comes to 320s vs. 44-16 wavs. I have definitely heard 256s translate weirdly in certain dynamic situations (e.g., acoustic plus voice plus shaker). Do you all really notice no difference from the source audio at 128, though? Last time I bought mp3s off A...

albums that sound really good or really bad as mp3s?
What albums, new or old, do you find especially good or bad as mp3s, compared to the original 16-44 CD wavs (or vinyl)? What kind of changes do you notice, good or bad? Any theories why? I listen to music mostly as 320 mp3s now, so this is a source of ongoing curiosity. Sometimes albums that were cl...

In a DAW universe, a time code track is pretty useless to a musician. You could get a synchronizer and use the time code to sync up many MIDI drum machines and synths to the tape. Then do a lot of cocaine and change your mind endlessly about what synth sounds will make the biggest hit. Archaeologist...

Couple thoughts: 1. For additional options, you might also check out the Acoustica (Acustica?) Nebula plugin set--basically many different eqs/comps/verbs modeled from various hardware. I've used the giveaway version in COMPUTER MUSIC, and it was noticeably better than a lot of other plugs. There ar...

Update: Got the Beyers, they are loud enough with the sources I've tried so far--no need for additional amplification. I don't need over-the-top volume anyway, as Mr. Snarl pointed out. Mostly I didn't want the phones to deliver a warped frequency response if they were starved for more current. From...

Thanks for all the good ideas -- it's especially interesting to see how Mr. Cat "reverse engineered" the process without using a specialized plug. Gotta admit I caved and just bought the Ren Bass plug. Simple, sounds good, and $64 was workable. Had a couple scares and annoyances already -- for examp...
