I try a 57 on something every four years or so. Then I go back to my theory that they are over-rated. You mention having the 604, try it out. I like the ATM23HE and the Beyer M88, and sometime a 414 buls on the shell. Many people like SDCs on snare. Any mic you have or can borrow might work on any g...

If you don't want to spot mic the ride (for whatever reason) you might consider raising the ride cymbal. A lot of the 'old-school' session guy had their rides high for that reason. Look at Gadd or Jeff Pocorro's set-ups.

You might want to bring up your alignment issues on the DIY gear forum. Brian Roth the moderator knows tape machines quite well. Most good tech knows the 'tricks' associated with different machines.

Here's a surprise, I get good drum sounds. I'm quite good at tuning, so that helps and I have nice high ceilings. I also find guitars to be quite simple. Bass can be really tough. Vocals vary. Horns and strings I'm fine I guess, but I don?t get much chance to work with them. I always find Hammond/Le...

Have you tried any other mics? Many people have ditched the 57 for mics that sound good. You might want to as well.

Like Chris, my clients expect me to work with a certain sense of efficiency and professionalism. There are definitely times to experiment, but not every single time I'm working in the studio.

markee2004,
Are you working on only your own music in your own room?

I gotta side with SA and Jon Brion on the SM57. I just find it to be a peaky, grainy piece of shit. I use one about once every four years. I re-confirm my dislike and back in the closet it goes. If my band didn't rehearse at the studio I'd sell them off in a second!

Oh man, does that mean I have to take full blame for the SM57?

I fucking love the 421. One of the greatest mics ever!

Or maybe the Highdive?

We'd have you here, but I can't
A) Guaranty we'll get off our lazy asses and book a show of our own
and
B) That our lazy friends will get off their lazy asses and come to the show.

It's rough being in the "laziest band in show-business!"
