Go for it.

Keep us posted. Congrats again! I thought I would check in on this thread. Just as a way of cheering on anyone who thinks it might be worth it to try going full-time, I wanted to report the the Local Natives record that I produced just past the 100,000 sales mark! Hope this does not come off as glo...

I always use Beta 58's on the Groupee Sessions. They sound fantastic through a good mic pre and do a great job at rejecting the drums, which we always set up in the same room as the singers.

I used their AEA R92 Ribbon mic in the back of the room and put it through a Chandler Compressor for a bit of room sound, yeah. The room sounds great, and that was a good spot for room sounds as it was in between the two isolation booths and didn't pick up much guitar from those booths, just thumpy,...

Ever wondered what Jackpot! studio sounds/looks like?

I had the chance to record the excellent band, The Hugs at Jackpot! for Groupee.com a few months ago. Here it is.

I'd be happy to answer any questions about microphone placement and stuff.

Great looking space, I steer more towards the industrial style but I can see how your space would be great juxtaposed with the rest of LA. Like going to the cottage. Mine will have a real mountain! LOL Folks love the home vibe of the studio. I am SO jealous that you will have real mountains in view...

The space looks cool. I especially like the log diffusor. Did you use the stardard 3D skyline-type calculations, or is it more random?
My apparently popular log diffusor is 100% random. It actually works though.

Thanks for the report. I'm moving to Vancouver to do the same thing in June. What's your space? In your home or separate? How did you draw attention to your business? My space is a converted garage studio, here are some photos. It is right behind my house and my neighbors have been nothing about su...

First Full year as a full-time recording engineer, a report.

Hi friends, I haven't been on the TOMB for quite some time, and I want to apologize. I have learned so much in these pages, and I owe some of the folks here a great deal of praise for their patience and time. I was laid off at UCLA about 16 months ago, and decided to make the plunge into full-time r...

Hey Chuck, It was a lot of fun, not too stressful. I usually record bands as live as possible and try to keep as much as we can of what we record, so it wasn't too different from the usual. I just made a template in ProTools with all the different inputs assigned and set up with mics already plugged...

This is simply awesome. There are a lot of Jason Falkner fans here in the Philadelphia area that will be hitting your site in the coming hours. Thanks for this. I'm also very interested in war stories regarding the challenges of putting this all together. Also, I am a huge fan of The Broken West, a...

Cool! be interested to hear what you learned about tracking this way over the course of the year. How long did you have to set up generally? We had two hours to set each band up, record four live songs, and do an interview. So it was really fast. Luckily I have drums already set up in my studio and...

Hey Travis, The website just heard good things about the studio, and I gave them a nice price. Many of the bands that they wanted to record were clients of mine, so it all worked out really well. The guys at the website are from Seattle, so they would pick 10 or 15 bands and come down to LA and we w...

Recording Live bands all last year.

I recorded about 40 bands live last year at my studio, and all are archived here at Groupee.com. Check it out!

It was a real challenge to make everything sound great with drums in the same room as singers, but I think it all works out in the end.

I don't use Waves L1, but I've had some favorable results with limiting the kick before. Usually when it's a metal band with double bass, out of necessity because the drummer wasn't very consistent with their attack. Never done it just as a creative choice, though I'm not opposed to the idea if the...

mjau wrote:I've liked the UAD LA3A on limit for kick, too...nothing too heavy, but still getting some tone and shaping happening.

What ratio are you using on the LA3A?
The thing I like about the waves plug is how it reacts lighting fast to the kick without actually thinning out the sound.
