good pencil mics?

so, i'm now at the point where I want to upgrade the MXL603S pair that I have. i love everything about them, but the highs are a little too boosted, and the noise floor isn't low enough - plus, they run pretty hot. so, i've decided it's all or nothing, and I'm wanting to invest in a great pair of pe...

Well, of course, everyone's system and mics and music is to their own, and I figured I'd chime in on what ends up happening for me. I initially tried doing minimal EQ increments - my theory is - "The way everything sounds when it's recorded is the way I like it - if it didn't sound good, then I chan...

It depends - is the piano a major instrument in the song, or a minor one? I don't have many ideas for making it the centerpiece, but a nice cardioid condenser over the opened top of the upright, about 1'-2' sounded really nice. You don't want to back the mics up too far for room sound, since you'll ...

I'm assuming you're talking about House Song, right? (and, honest feedback is the only feedback worth writing) The song is really two completely different parts - the first 'half', and after the crescendo, the 'up' part of the song. The drums were recorded very dry in the first part, and verb is use...

i've emailed Dave - and i heard it from his mouth. he designed the mojave audio mic, and he wants people to get that (since I believe that it's what the 2001 mid is in a mic). so, he no longer is selling the kits for the mod. we're on our own. the parts are coming to me at the moment. had to go to m...

my setup runs 24 tracks, but only allows me to get 4 at a time. it's the BEST limitation ever! kick: akg d12e stereo pair ala glyn johns thread: MXL 603S (amazing pencil mics for the money - they run a little hot though, and need a -10db pad) room: nady rsm-2 ribbon (for realism and depth) try to re...

hard to say, actually. the 4050 seems like it might beef up and darken the viola a little bit...but, you always have to try and see. don't be afraid to track 2 or 3 mics (if you have the room), and just keep the ones that end up working the best upon mixing. or, blend the mics together, and pan them...

I'm sure that Glyn probably tailored his technique to every band. I know that this setup was used for some tracking at Criteria studios in Miami in the 70's when he was there. Believe it or not, it sounds like the drums will sound very distant and the cymbals will be amazingly overpowering with the ...

the links are broken. http://www.lyndonband.com/songs/Lyndon%20-%20The%20Lawn.mp3 I like the way this sounds. I dig the kick in the right. remember, I'm just some asshole on the interwebs... I would pull some of the low out of the guitar. the cymbals don't sound so good to me in that last loud bit ...

I'm going to have to use a ribbon mono overhead now. Or, at least try it out. If anything, I've enjoyed minimal panning on kits now, anyways, due to all this talk.

I was told by a guy who worked with Glyn Johns (Dad, coincendentally) that Glyn used this 4 mic setup: Two overheads, usually pencil mics, in a matched pair, cardioid, with one at a measured distance over the snare, high enough to catch the crash cymbals (usually 5'-7'), and the other at that same m...

Some outside recording input - compressor settings/EQ

Hey guys - new to the board - I've been a reader for a while, and I thought it was time I jumped in on all the great topics here. So, I decided to take on the endeavour of recording our album all to myself, and although it's allowing endless production creativity, something is still amiss, mostly wi...
