I don't worry too much about cleaning my guitars. A little grunge/dings/scrapes/bruises just adds character to my Strats & Teles. If I were to spill beer on them, or something like that, then I would certainly clean them.

You should go to the Pike Place Market. It's very touristy, but it's a very cool place to spend the day. I've lived in Seattle a long time, and still try to hit up the PPM as often as I can. Very fast, very accurate, many tuning modes, and built super solid. Doesn't hurt that it looks uber cool as well.

If you can't get a great vocal sound with an API preamp, then the gear isn't your problem.
