388! make sure it's in good condition. and buy locally. you might pay $500 for one of these on ebay, and it'll get to you in pieces if not packed right. i always wanted a 388, but don't have the space. I got a FREE 246 instead, and a 22-2 to mixdown/bounce to. both needed refurbishing. An alternativ...

just caught sonny and the sunsets+sandwitches (my band played w/ em a few years back, nice ladies) not too long ago in socal. Great show!!!

i like the SF 388 sound, who wouldnt?

loudness/compression is just one part of the mastering equation. if you already know you want it loud, then mix it loud - the ME will still have plenty of work to do w/ EQ, fades, authoring files, hitting tape etc... it always amazes me, the ability of mastering engineers to EQ a full mix with insan...

recorded on a tascam 144. Just picked up a 246 for 25 bucks, replaced the belts, needs a new pinch roller...but otherwise working great! love 4-track.

yea! i love LDC on kick. dynamics can be dark sounding, i always end up with a kick you can feel but not really hear when i close mic w/dynamic. not always what i want. i actually like to place the LDC more as a Front of Kit mic, a few feet away, and aimed just a few inches below the top lip of the ...
