The Stereophile led me to the sexy Amphion Ion, which turned out to be more expensive than they had listed. Still looking at the chart..

I bought that Stereophile Buying Guide, but I haven't cracked it open yet since they also had the new 2600 at B&N. I'm with you, Calaveras, in that I cannot parse hi-fi marketing talk. I know that there must be some hi-fi speakers that are more or less the same as monitors, and I also know that it's...

Those are pretty delicious. Maybe I should wait and save up. There's an idea..

If the speakers I've mentioned, or their competitors, aren't likely to sound a lot better than what I have, that's good advice too.

I think I need new passive monitors

I've been using ART SLM-1 monitors (which are the same as the Yorkville YSM1) powered by an Adcom 535. I posted my new ~ 12x10x8 foot room here. http://messageboard.tapeop.com/viewtopic.php?t=57866&start=538. I record and mix in the same room, primarily myself. I think I'll be able to make better de...

It's really good. Miami Steve has speech patterns very similar to Shake from the Aqua Teens.

I appreciate your delicacy. It's mostly live and, as you can tell, without a click. I took a bass and guitar DI. We monitored through earbuds underneath shooter's attenuating earmuffs. Lots of guitars and vocals are overdubs, though the lead vocal on track 3 made it all the way. Recording and editin...

50s x 90s Rock album

Thanks to recommendations on this BBS we got Carl Saff to master it. I also got some critical advice on mixing from Chris "alpacaranch" here. Without them it probably would have sounded like total shit. I play bass and fiddle on this album and recorded it. There are 320kbps MP3s for download. http:/...

I think quality control is overrated when it comes to musical instruments, since you don't necessarily want consistency. Improving quality control is a tradeoff. For each dog you eliminate, you also eliminate a magical instrument. There are lots of very consistent and very boring instrument makers o...

Mineral wool: stuff inside wall vs. panels?

I've got a guy putting in a wall so I can have a room for a studio. He's going to fill it with 3" mineral wool. Is the stuff they use for that purpose, the same stuff you make bass traps out of? I might as well get him to bring me over a few batches if that's the case.

When your average person says, "I like that song!" what they're really saying is, "I know that song!" Are you playing for the average person or not? It's that simple.

Art shows. Having multiple configurations of people who can play different venues. Re-imagining your songs for different dynamic levels. Art shows. People go to art openings with open minds and are often shopping. If they don't like the $250 print they might buy the $5 EP because they liked a song o...
