Re: What Did You Work On Today? 1-26-05

Get your damn heater fixed. I didn't and it flooded my whole basement. & you know what I keep in my basement? It took two whole days to clean-up. By the grace of God or some other supernatural force, everything was just high enough off the ground not to get too wet. Otherwise, I'm at work and can't ...

Re: Equipment you HATE but everyone else seems to LOVE

I hate P-90 guitar pickups I got a 59 LP Junior with original P90's. It sounds awesome & it's my favorite guitar I've ever owned... That said, it can be a bitch to record. Those pick-ups PICK-UP everything. I usually need to find a noiseless position and stand perfectly still while I play. Sometime...

Re: favorite pedal

I ressurected my Klon Centaur today. Damn thing is a pretty spectacular overdrive, especially for recording at lower volumes.

Re: Bias Peak

I love Peak. It really makes my music sound better. The key is rather obvious, a light touch is best.

WaveLab seemed real nice but I only used it on one project on someone else's computer, and as has been noted, I don't think there's a Mac version.

Re: Need your advice: master CD level

It's kind of the bigger-is-better mentality and it's distinctly unmusical. Just turn on your local FM corporate rock outlet. And I'm talking beyond how sh*tty the music is, it SOUNDS AWFUL. Big, washed-out guitars that sound are so fried out they've got no guts left at all. Triple-delayed, auto-tune...

Re: Need your advice: master CD level

You can either cut those clips manually (with gain control on a very selected segment) or use a hard limiter with a high threshold across the whole track. I haven't opened Peak for a few weeks but I remember it being easy and effective. In principle, though, I agree that dynamics are what you want. ...

Re: Need your advice: master CD level

I mastered an EP worth of material on Peak Bias last year. Hell of a program and I did it free and legal. They offer a 2 week demo of the entire program on their website. Just have your stuff mixed and ready to go. Then, spend two weeks getting it perfect. By the by, if you never shut your computer ...

Re: the song with the fattest groove ever.

Express Yourself, Charles Wright for funky groove.

Honky Tonk Women, Rolling Stones for more of a rocking groove.

DP 4.5x benefits?

OK. I pretty much figured out MOTU's stripped down Audio Desk 2.0 program. Now. what are the benefits going to up Digital Performer? I don't do any MIDI stuff, just straight tracking, mixing and some minimal effects use. I do want to buy some nice plug-ins which I assume will be supported by AD 2.0....

Re: Best guitar amp for bass uses (Traynor or fender)?

I record through a 62 Fender Bassman and it sounds great. Great warm, round tone and with just enough punch. And all those elements really come through in the recording. As far as playing at live volumes, I don't think I'd go that far. It does, however, all depend on what kind of music you're playin...

Re: Radio Interference problem - HELP!

I've had this problem in my basement. Then I hung my cables along the ceiling rather than letting them lay along the ground. The problem was gone. Due to diminished mental capacity, it took me a while to arrive at this solution. I suggest you just experiment with your cable placement- each and every...

Got my Magnatone 280 back from the shop, new speakers & tubes and a whole going over! Sounds great! Played it all night & pissed off my girlfriend who wanted to watch TV together on the couch.

Re: Utilitarian Compressors

I've always found the Super Nice mode on the RNC to be excellent for bass and drums. Just don't try and squash stuff with it or you get some nasty sounds.

Re: A New Low

It's about as low as Queen's "re-union tour with f*cking PAUL RODGERS as Freddy Mercury. Or when Thin Lizzy toured without Phil Lynott, or the Cut the Crap album from a Mick Jones/Paul Simonon-less CLASH. Ohhh... But then again all the aforementoined bands were actually great at one time. Unlike INXS.

Re: Digital Performer/Audio Desk Min. Requirements

How many tracks you want to run with how much processing? These are questions you must know the answers to. Also, how much dither you want and do you want to run other programs simulaneously.

Look for the MOTU-MAC group on Yahoo. Those folks can answer your questions.
