Another aspect of it is bleed . Or spill, as they say in the UK. It's not so much mixed to death in post but that after the 60s --especially in the 70s when the technology first made it possible-- every instrument was separate, gated, isolated, even if the musicians were all in the same room. Made ...

Some general ramblings about aesthetics and late 60s pop

I have recently become enchanted by the sound of old pop recordings, especially stuff from the late 60s/early 70s. The music itself has always been tops to me, but it is only lately that I've realized how much the particulars of how it was recorded contribute to its overall quality. I am especially ...

Maybe its me, but im not really digging the really strong delay on the beginning vocals. i think a milder delay, the kind that you dont really hear explicitly as much as you get a sense of space from, would work better. if you recorded it to a click track Pro Tools should have a setting in the delay...

Low end can be really tricky, especially if you are monitoring in a less than ideal environment. It sounds pretty good, but if I had to suggest something Id say Id like to feel the bass guitar more. It seems like the guitars are taking up a lot of the space and sometimes overpowering the vocals, tho...

"The Girl In the Road" works the best, for me. Nice one. you do a good job keeping it from being harsh. Did you eq a lot or just record it that way? I like the sound of the drums, myself, although they are odd. Thanks, I do try to limit the harshness of certain things. I dont totally love my voice,...

I just took a listen to the first to tracks....and i have to say it sounds like it was put together quite well. Kinda reminded me of The Autumn Defense recordings a bit. Musicianship is pretty good...everything sounds well played. Pretty well done recording wise....but I'm just listening to it on c...

I had this same argument with someone else on another message board. Surf's Up, that's NOT the way public radio works at all. They give you "incentive gifts" for contributing money. They don't just give away CDs or laptops or whatever, why in the world would they do that? I think the thing is that ...

If you're truly trying to emulate the public radio model, shouldn't you offer the album for free to those who choose not to make contributions? I'm all for novel approaches to what is at times a frustrating business to be involved in (and I enjoyed the one song you posted), but I tend to agree with ...

I made an album...

Hi, TOMB.... I just finished making an album. I wrote and played all the parts and I recorded it in a spare bedroom (okay, I tracked a few things in the bathroom too  ). I really never thought I'd get it done. And I'm not entirely happy with the end result, but I am pretty satisfied at having ...

Lots of great ideas here. Definitely going to experiment with some of them. I do have a violin of my own that I can let him use on a take or two to provide a different timbre. I'll probably end up using the cellist for the viola parts, since it will be my brother, and I can take up more of his time ...

i do intend to have cello as well. "viola" parts will be covered either by the violinist or the cellist depending on the part. on some songs id rather have it sound like a small to medium sized chamber group that a simple string quartet. thats sort of what im aiming for with the doubles. i like the ...

If their dynamic balance is good maybe just a good stereo pair at an appropriate distance to utilize the sound of the room?

Using a single string player to create an ensemble sound

I am going to be using a violinist friend to record some parts on some original songs im working on. my plan is to have him double some of the parts several times over to give the illusion of a string section as opposed to just a solo violin. Id like to wrap everything up expediently, mainly as a co...

actually im incredibly dimwitted and realized why my current session was fucking up still. but my curiosity remains about what sort of things cause a session to lag....is it the size of the audio files in the session? or just having a lot of tracks in playback at once? or a lot recording at once? or...
