I ordered the Shinybox 23. I plan to use this mic in a M-S configuration, and Jon from Shinybox told me that the larger mic bodies have a more even response front to back, the 46 is a bit brighter in one direction because the ribbon is not mounted symmetrically. So the 23 it is. I ordered it today, ...

I love my NT5s.... drum overheads and acoustic guitar is what I mostly use them for. Also percussion (djembes, hand drums, etc).

I agree that Shinybox looks great, but which one? The 23 or the 46? I wish they had the 46 in stock, I'd be tempted to just order both....

I agree, sm0king is a quick way to shift to an altered state of consciousness, which given the right context can be beneficial. My favorite story around this comes from Ram Dass. Early in his career, he was a colleague of Tim Leary, doing scientific research on all manner and type of hallucinogens a...

I'd look really hard at the Rodes with the new diaphragms, like the K2. Or for that matter, you could get a pair of the NT2As, which has the same diaphragm....

chinese ribbon mic questions

Hi all, I've decided to dive into the world of ribbon mics with one of the cheapo chinese imports. I've never used a ribbon before. I've begun to look into it, and have learned that there are basically 2 models being produced and widely rebranded. My first inclination is to go with Shinybox , both b...

ART TubePAC mod?

Greetings, I find the ART TubePAC to be surprisingly serviceable for a lowend unit. I'm wondering if anyone knows of any DIY mods to improve the sound. The most immediate mod would be to simply change the tubes; it uses 2 12AX7s, and I've heard of people having good results with 12AU7s, but this is ...

I agree that separation is overrated. What I'd do is spend time using several microphones to pick up the performer, whatever he/she is doing. Make sure each of these mics is in phase with the others, and take the time to find sweet spots. Hopefully you have a good sounding room. You can also experim...
