Re: HELP! , I screwed up and need adivice/distorted track
If it's a case of a single clipped waveform, you can zoom way in and find the waveform that's squared off at the top instead of rounded and redraw it as round with the pencil tool. This won't work if it's more than a single clip at a time. But if it's a vocal pop or spit crackle or somthing like tha...

Re: Can an assload of Mastering compression sound good?
hey yo that sounded awesome on my system, especially the ridiculously low bass stuff. plenty loud. way low, though, not surprised it doesn't come through on some speakers. prolly be good in a car system though, they all seem to have subs now.

Re: a few general amp questions...
there are pedals made just for this, such as the zvex super hard on, or the klon centaur.frank wrote:-if my guitar pickup's output is really low and just turning up the amp adds a ton of hiss, what should I do? will boosting with an EQ pedal just boost the noise too?

Re: Raised, but not floating, floor
yes, you'd have to take steps to prevent/deaden resonance in the floor boards and cavity. like filling the cavity with fiberglass, say, which would get gross fast when mixed with water seepage.stuntbutt wrote:A raised floor would sound like ass anyway.

i have one of those. it's a really really good cassette 4track. one thing that's cool about it is it has effect loops on every channel and direct tape outs. using the effect returns and direct outs, you can totally bypass the mixer section, which is the weak link.
and isn't it pretty?

Re: Johnny Cash American recording acoustic gtrs
no one thinks those albums are far too compressed and high-end hyped? i sorta wondered if that sound was a way of dealing with what must've been a weakened voice.
don't get me wrong, the music is great.

i can set you up with a pair of C1000s for well within your budget. (though i can't exactly recommend them.)

Re: Sound treating the mixing room...
do the foam corner thingies work? or do I have to get or build something more extensive? harley, the graph that ethan posted shows that yeah, the foam thingies work. but not nearly as well, and not as low down as minitraps on a corner. so if you've already got em, ok put em up. but if you're trying...

Re: Recording solo cello
You know what to do. But if it doesn't cut it (and since he has a specific sound in mind), say "let's try this" and put the mic right in front of his face, looking down at the bridge of the cello. Ok, move it until it's not in his way, but the idea is to get the mic to hear his instrument the way he...

Re: Gear Design... Graduate School?
Dunno how applicable this will be, but i'll tell you about my experience at RPI, in the Architectural Acoustics program. First of all, it is primarily architectural acoustics, as oobedoob said, with emphasis on how to build buildings and rooms that sound the way they should. But we learned a lot of ...

Re: large vs small diaphragm condensers as room mics
as far as i can tell, the gold standard would be schoeps sd mics or neumann M49/50 ld mics. but that's just hearsay, i haven't used them. in my own experience, earthworks sd mics or akg 414 ld mics are equally awesome. but different, as you noticed. i have found, with cello, that mic height is a big...

Re: Recording a Stand-Up Bass and other session suggestions.
take the time to figure out which mic sounds best on each vocalist, and use it (probably the neumann or big mxl). i'd try either the octavas or the akgs on drum overheads, with whichever ld condensor isn't being used for vocal on front-of-kit or kick. the other sd condensors on acoustic gtr, and 57s...

Re: large vs small diaphragm condensers as room mics
i have some experience recording cello. i have some questions for you: what kind of room were you recording in? (concert hall or living room?) where did you place the mics relative to the cello? what mic preamps did you use? was this solo cello or was it meant to fit in a mix? i've had good and bad ...

Re: metric halo uln-2,2882 dsp, marshall jubilee
hey folks, just wanna say this is an excellent deal on the uln-2, a really great box at twice the price. strong, clean preamps with good di, good monitoring section, firewire connectivity, good software routing control, and stable drivers (for mac).
