first i figure out what the "core" of the song will be (guitar part, percussion, something else) and record that; then i write and record the rest of it. i use a click as necessary. my music tends to have many different instruments on each track, and so i build it up layer by layer.

So I ended up getting a 466 with the DM44 option. It came with 2 10x probes, though one registers as a 1x - think there's something wrong with it, or should it be okay? DM leads, temp probe, a few other goodies. I think I'll track down a pair of 1x/10x probes. Have a function generator kit on the w...

If you're open to small diaphragms, AT4051 is a nice mic and can be obtained for a reasonable price on the used market.

My happiest two-mic drums have been with a ribbon out front and a dynamic on the kick. I like terrible, muddy drum sounds though, so ymmv.

Bipolar caps show lower distortion than polarized electrolytics (Douglas Self, among others, has written about this) of the same size. The phantom blocking cap on a mic preamp will often be 47uF or bigger; the voltage would be higher, though. Bipolar caps are easy to source (from digikey, mouser, or...

A storage scope should let you turn the storage function off. A storage scope isn't necessary.

Most of the nonpolarized electrolytics I've used are marked with "BP" for bipolar.

But I don't think you should worry too much. Guitar amps aren't broadband beasts. Try running your amp with a 30' cable, see if it oscillates, and if it doesn't you're probably fine.

The problem is not RFI but, potentially, capacitance and resistive losses. Unless your amp is susceptible to picking up interference on its output terminals (which is possible, but you're going to have to try and see) any RFI on the cable itself will be far too low a level to be important. Resistive...

Interference seems unlikely to be a problem due to the high level and low impedance involved. The output impedance of the amp is low enough it'd take quite a bit of capacitance to have an audible effect on tone.

Don't think you have to get a Tek or HP; there were many American, European, Japanese companies making nice scopes. Don't worry about calibration too much. Even a grossly out of calibration scope is going to be adequate for most of what seems to come up in audio electronics - building fuzz boxes and...

Buy a used analog two channel 20MHz scope off eBay. You should be able to get something for $50, plus $20 for some probes (those crappy no-name ones you find everywhere will work fine). You won't be able to get anything decent & digital unless you're willing to spend much, much more. If you can find...

That pencil trick is great for changing strings, too. A bit of graphite on the nut and bridge makes 'em tune easier and break less
