I have used a At4031 with a windscreen for vocals with some success. I actually used to use it for live gigs. The last one I got on ebay was $75.00 with shipping, which to me is not bad considering that's cheaper than a brand new 58. They also make good overhead mic's and sound good on acoustic guit...

I dig it. I'm a fan of hearing more of the room but that's a taste issue. I would also fade the song out. Traveling songs with this type of beat sound good with a fade out because it gives the sense that it keeps going on forever. Also, the intro seems a bit long to me. I would sugget is having the ...

The Shure M367 is specifically designed for what you're doing. It's battery powered and has built in limiters. There's one here in Austin on craigslist for sale for $300.00. He's lowered the price a couple of times already. When they pop up on ebay they don't go for too much more that this. If I wer...

I typically record rootsy / largely acoustic stuff - think roots blues, indie-folk, Americana (or whatever the hell it's called now), old country, that sort of thing. Do you have any MP3s done with these pres that reflect that side of recording? More acoustic sounds, that is? I can attest to the Ro...

By The Way, Did you see Willie when you were out there at Pedernales? He doesn't hang there very much anymore from what I understand. He lives right up the road and has his own studio at his "western town" set up, with fewer hangers on. I got to record there once for his daughter Paula. I got to us...

What did "boo" plug the 57 into? It looked like everything went into a 24 Input Vintage 80 Series Neve Console. I have one of these at home. Okay I lied there a little. This obviously had a lot to do as to why it sounded great. Of course, I'm sure a really badass condenser mic would have sounded aw...

SM57 lesson
I was fortunate enough to record an acoustic track for a record at Pedernales Studios outside of Austin yesterday. It's a pretty badass studio and I was really looking forward to get a chance to record there. Since time was tight and we needed to focus on the task I knew I shouldn't to talk shop wit...

This is the d.i. I gig with. It works really well for me. I went to guitar center to buy a baggs para d.i. but they were out of them, so on a whim I went with the bbe 1000. They had the wrong price tag on it and didn't realize it until I was done checking out, so I got it for about half price. Pro's...

"The Hot Spot". Dennis Hopper film with a young Jennifer Connelly and Don Johnson. Jack Nitzsche score with Miles Davis, John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Earl Palmer, and more. So low down. I lost my copy but just found one on the ebay. The cuts with Miles and Hooker are bad ass. The movie is pretty good...

I know this might sound crazy, but I get a great bass sound from my fender champ on about 3 or 4. I mic it with an AT4050 on cardiod about 3-5 inches away. When you bring it up in the mix it's got an older r&b sound to it. I love that kind of bass sound as opposed to "city bass" ala Seinfeld. I've a...

I used headphones as a mic once to try and get an old trumpet sound. It was "uncanny" [hee hee] how much it sounded like it was recorded in the 1920's. Also, here's a link for loudspeaker mic circuit.

I've been out of town for a few days so I haven't seen this thread in awhile. Derrick, PM me about the m67 transformers. I have two extra from Rod's Mod's. Snatchman, thank you for the compliment. For me, there's nothing much more fun than geeking out on multi-tracking. Rod, I'm going to try some of...
