Re: 2 questions: fidelity: 16bit vs. cassette / live dB leve
also, on a side note; what is a good dB level for live shows? its hard to tell if a live mix is too loud; with my hearing, i blast everyone away. oh right, and... the optimial level for listening to music is approximately 85dB-SPL. this is about where equal-loudness begins to cause problems. but, a...

Fidelity is subjective No, aesthetic is subjective. Fidelity can be measured. In fact, I have some rough mesasurements for you now. The normal-bias compact cassette has a dynamic range of about 60dB. Add dolby and you might get it to 63dB. The compact disc as a dynamic range of about 96dB. I don't ...

I don't think I would consider Brian Jonestown "lo-fi." But I think it's safe to assume most of their records were professionaly mastered. For "lo-fi" type things, I think having records professionally mastered might be MORE important than big studio albums. Lo-fi recording tend be more varied in so...

crashing the ride cymbal isn't the problem i think. the problem is kids playing the shit right through their kit and crashing the ride. I think Scum nailed it though: Dave Grohl, Keith Moon. Both names come to mind, and they sound amazing. it's hard to pull off, but easy to fake poorly. that's the t...

Re: Recording to tape and then moving to digital
and then send them back to the 8-track on 1 track why? better idea: record your drums on all 8 tracks (get some good room mics in there too). dump it to digital, and work from there. if you absolutely HAVE to go back to analog, just mix your final mix to 4 stereo subgroups, drums, bass, guitars, vo...

I think first off you have to be able to have a monitoring system and room that allows you to make critical decisions in that range..then the factor that most involves instrument seperation is timbre..the bass and kick have to be distinct sounds or they will blend no matter what..you can acieve thi...

Seems like everyone is suggesting the kick go on the bottom, and the bass a little higher - which it what i usually aim for too. but if you're working with a metal band, it may be differerent. so it depends on the aesthetic of the music you're working with. Listen to the Refused "Liberation Frequenc...

Re: s
Yes, of course a mastering engineer wants a file that wasn't compressed on the master bus. I am talking about no compression on any of the tracks, either. ? Frankly, that's not really your job to worry about; it's the mix engineer's. I'm not sure there's anyway for you, as a mastering engineer, to ...

However, I also use my iPod to store WAVs/AIFFs of any new mixes that I'm working on. I'm able to move them everywhere and test them on multiple stereos, earbuds, computer speakers, etc without the waste of burning 10,000 CDs. i've tried this too, but my model iPod (if not all models) can't do 24-b...

What I don't get is how bniesz didn't get to approve the master. What's the story there? I would ditch the label if they're not going to let bands approve their masters. I'm assuming that bniesz isn't in the band. That's correct. The band approved the masterer. Plus, the band was told that it was m...
