Re: Re-tubing U47?

Telefunken NA also sells VF14 tubes if you let them install it for you, but I wouldn't expect a good price. EF14s are MUCH cheaper and it's only a matter of swapping out two or three components to change for it. I have never heard any comparisons but I'd imagine there's got to be a sonic reason why...

Re: Setting Levels for Analoque board/Pro Tools?

I don't have a lot of experience doing this but I'll take a stab. With all your faders at unity (0) hit the 1kHz button and and the VUs should read 0VU. If not, move the faders to compensate. 0VU is usually calibrated with internal pots to read 0 at +4dBm. To double check, measure 1.23VAC across pin...

Re: which mic pres don't clip?

Every mic pre will clip the signal if this input signal exceeds its max headroom. I would say look for a mic pre that has a headroom of +27dBu or greater and also includes pads and/or variable input sensitivity and you'll be in good shape.

Re: Best D.I.Y. Neve Kit (complete) ?

The transformer, which is a Sowter 9160 (fits in 1RU chassis) or 8751 (too big for 1RU but has 3dBu more headroom) can be also be purchased at http://www.prodigy-pro.com/SearchResult.aspx?CategoryID=120 or http://www.sowter.co.uk/ - Carnhill also makes one you can use (VTB series, I forget the exact...

Re: The Guitar Center in Manhattan

nice - keep em coming. I wanna have an all synth weekend, NYC style. Maybe one of you all wants to take me on a synth tour. Lunch is on me. I would say Rogue, Two Lines, and Dr. Sounds for the old stuff and 48th St @ 7AV for the new stuff pretty much covers it. Buy a Funpass metrocard and enjoy you...

I second this. http://www.twolinesmusic.com/welcomeTLM.html
I think the owner used to do tech work and mods for some pretty big names in the 80s. I forget his name.

Re: Best D.I.Y. Neve Kit (complete) ?

Dave, I didn't know you racked some 33415s. Nice!!! That is good info to know about. Let me state for the record that I haven't used any of the aforementioned units, only original Neves, and that my comparison was strictly financial. Many users on this board have used both the SCA and Vintech and I ...

Re: My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at

this whole thread seems to have more to do with issues of trust between creative friends than a home recording vs studio recording issue. This guy is just upset because he has established a serious connection to this band and now they aren't interested in working with him. Yes! Thank you! The debat...

Re: My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at

I think it's kind of silly you are getting mad that your client wants to record at home. You said yourself you used to work in "real" studios and now have a home studio. You might as well be mad at yourself. The projects I do at home are with bands who could never afford to record at a real studio ...

Re: Best D.I.Y. Neve Kit (complete) ?

Also, depending on how tech saavy you are and how much homework you're willing to do (based on experience I would advise against it), there's another option. Find some original modules and rack them yourself. Recently, Sonic Circus was selling 33415 line amps for the VERY reasonable price of $350 ea...

Re: Best D.I.Y. Neve Kit (complete) ?

I'm intending to sell completely assembled two-channel, 1RU units at DIY kit prices within the next two months. There will be a no frills, low-budget version with the tape op community in mind, but R&D keeps taking a lot longer than expected everytime I reinvent my approach to make it better. I will...

Trevord, that's an excellent post! :) And some you others too. Thanks everyone who's replied so far. I get to bitch while simultaneously enjoying an interesting discussion which doesn't have to do with gear! :^:

Re: My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at

Why are you guys bringing up the gear? As mentioned, I'm using shit for gear. This is my home studio I'm talking about, which I've operated commercially to serve very poor and unknown bands for three years - not one of the real studios I've worked at. When the aforementioned client scored free time ...

My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at home

What's worse is she's recording for her side of split record with a band I just recorded here. There's going to be a huge difference in quality! Out of all the musicians who think a studio is just a bunch gear and wasting money, and that they can do it better themselves, this was the last band I'd e...

Re: Blood Sugar Sex Magic and your F you indie spirit

Then Marc Ribot comes in. 10 minutes before the show. I am eager to help him because he is Fu$kin Marc Ribot, I'm on stage moving mics around, and I ask him what he needs in his monitors..... He puts a beer bottle under his borrowed amplifier to angle it slightly and says "I'm good". I set up for M...
