Re: Just Curious...

I agree with the above: When the Song transcends the Production it is a classic. I can listen to hissy bootlegs or hi-tech remixes of a song and if it still gives me the same feeling regardless of context and treatment then I know it is about the Song. Guided By Voices hit it hardest and best on Ali...

Re: Just Curious...

Because there is not a lot of specific detail here, I'm going to make a couple of guesses about some things. Please bear with me here. Well captured sounds are essential even in so called "lo-fi" recordings like early REM or Pavement. The issue here is about polishing. Drums are a good example. The ...

Re: dumping tape to tools

The whole sync to tape thing is a NIGHTMARE! Avoid it, unless you have some good business-y reason to try it, it is not worth it. I agree with earlier posters here, decide what you can put in 8 tracks of analog to really help your song, then bite the bullet and do the rest in PT. Recording to digita...

Re: My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at

I guess I didn't understand part of the initial concern... You know, I've worked with people with halfway decent gear where we got along pretty good and I would say I was "happy" with the results. That doesn't mean I didn't suspect I might be able to do better if I had more control over the circumst...

Re: My oldest client has betrayed me by trying to record at

For me it came down to cost vs getting what I want out of a recording. I've done every variation except "full on, full budget, label financed," and that is the problem! It is all out of my own pocket. If I got a good result from a middle tier studio, I often couldn't book with the same guy (because ...

Re: For the parents on this board: Logistics question

The first thing that happened just before my son was born (2 years ago), the band stopped playing live. I am fortunate that I built a sonically fortified rehearsal room that was meant to contain a four piece band.... I ended up turning it into a home studio instead. The drummer/engineer felt a bit g...

Re: Blood Sugar Sex Magic and your F you indie spirit

I only come to this board because I believe that if you buy a signature Eric Clapton guitar that you will instantly get "slow hands" especially if you buy a pedal that models all the classic vintage Clapton tones. After that, my Peavey Backstage 15 will rip! And I will only make good recordings if I...

Re: The Value in Turd Polishing

I did EXACTLY what you are planning to do... I combined three session, two drummers and mixes I didn't especially like by a producer who couldn't get it and three songs by a really good engineer who couldn't keep the kick out of the bass guitar frequencies. I sequenced and mastered them and then she...

Re: What Did You Work On Today? 2-05-05

I hung a suspended ceiling in my laundry room :-) Last night though I nailed a mix... because I'm at home, and it is my project I find I can tweak and tweak... Earlier this week I was asking the board about the sound in the Nazz's "Open My Eyes" and got a decent substitute from the Bitrman's Phlange...

Re: Inexpensive Clock Solution?

Keep your eyes peeled. I picked up a demo Apogee Rosetta at my local GC for $400 last year (AND it was 24/96)...

You just never know what is going to show up in that scratch and dent rack...

Re: What reverb do you like?

I agree with Chris Garges on the Klark Teknik-- I have been borrowing one and it can really create a room around your overheads-- I like to make it 21meters wide! I like to mix spring reverb with digital reverb AND digital delay. It doesn't sound real, but it sounds *real cool*. I have a QuadraVerb ...

Re: How do you get that filter sweep in The Nazz "Open

Could the comb filtering on the Bitrman be a vehicle to try this as well?

I'm not going to get it to happen with a tape machine (unless I want to spend hours at my friend's house to make it happen, which I don't).

Re: Tubulators are now $15...

I got one of those Artisan Lap Steels for X-mas. I think my wife bought it at the $80 price point. (When I put it on my Amazon list it was $100). These are definitely worth $60 if you want to get a feel for lap steel. They are noisy and they drift out of tune without much effort. The steel bar you'l...
