Drum Phase

I know it when I hear something out of phase - well versed in how to sleuth it out on the mixing board. However - how can you prevent phase issues when micing the kit initially? Specifically the kick drum. I see a lot of threads about multiple mics on the kick and snare & am curious how you guys go ...

Triggering Midi? or what the hell am I after here?

Hey Guys, I'm kinda a noob when it comes to midi stuff. I'm essentially wanting to trigger a midi vsti with a wave form. Is there some sort of "drumagog" that triggers midi? To further blather - I'm actually trying to trigger phatmatick pro with a audio kick wave file. Any keen ideas on how to go ab...

Korg D888 looks like it might be the one. Tons of outs!

I wish there was just a simple 4 track that WASNT a laptop that could parse out's into more than just two, but alas.

right on! exactly what I was after. I reckon a mic pre before the effects on the wet channel would be ideal. A art tube or ehx something that can take a beating but boost the signal to the pedal. Roger that on the DI being last on the wet & most surely use a splitter to keep efx out of the monitors....

Live Vocal Effects

A friend was debating me on the merits of having a "vocal effects processor" or a vocal pedal when playing live. Their band is too small to afford a sound guy, and they rely heavily on reverb, delay, etc... on their vocals. My question is: is there really any difference between running your vocal th...

I guess that's what I'm talking about. Someone wrote earlier that 'your only as strong as your weakest link', and I couldn't disagree more. I think the song is the only link period, and it will triumph over ANY manner of fidelity good or bad. I remember reading that George Harrison couldn't stand li...

I'm not expecting a bunch of "amens" here, but don't you think if a song is good enough, that fidelity is the lowest rung on the ladder?

Fidelity Does Not Matter!

For those of you who record yourself, engineer yourself, mix yourself, and sometimes master yourself - ever find yourself saying "fuck it, that's good enough!"?! I'm always challenged by the fact that fidelity truly, honestly, and unequivocally does not matter. Every "classic" record by definition w...

you know - I'm discovering that I'm a really impatient engineer...especially when it comes to recording my own stuff. It's been a long time since I've recorded finger picking stuff and I recall liking the large condense, but realized I just patched it wrong, and into the wrong mic input and was hear...

Finger Picking Guitar

hi guys,

So I used a large condens today & it sounded like shit. The low notes were just too woofy and unbalanced compared to the others.
Would you guys recommend using a dynamic for delicate finger picking guitar work?

A tad out of my element on this.
thanks.

I'm doing a record right now where the basic tracks are ALL done on a cassette 4-track. Then mixed out of the tape outs to my DAW. I'm loving the way it's sounding. I'm just using one mic on everything. The same SM57...& it's sounding killer. Granted it's got that "4 track" sound....but that's what ...
