Re: recording in a shoebox

The reason I recommend the Helmholtz resonators as opposed to just the bass traps is that a Helmholtz resonator will be frequency specific. Think of a bass trap as a broadband shelf as opposed to the Helmholtz notching out whatever desired frequencies that are causing your problems.

If you'd like to try to build a really cheap, but somewhat effective Helmholtz resonator http://web.archive.org/web/200008161452 ... mTubes.asp

Re: What sounds better a pc or a mac?

To begin with, I don't really believe that this is really a bad question. When I first went digital, I wish I had an understanding of what the differences were between a Mac and a PC. I made the mistake of buying a PC and have come to really dislike working on the windows platform. Had I had a bette...

Minneapolis band with a new record needs a drummer.

We just finished a record in December, but our drummer has moved out of state so we need a replacement soon. Anyone know anybody?...A little help?

Re: Replacements

I've always loved the Replacements....untill Bob had to leave and all....gotta say that was about as sad as it gets. Somewhere I have a copy of "Shit Hits the Fans"....But I also have a double album of live stuff thats truly nuts with stuff like "Fuck My School"... a great "September Gurls" (Big Sta...

Re: Any Steve Tibbetts fans?

Awesome to see Steve Tibbetts getting some appreciation here...I've gotten to see him and Marc Anderson a few times at the Walker Art Center and talk about holding an audience's attention! All I can say is that I was so consumed with listening that I never really payed any attention to what he was u...

Re: ear training excersizes

This last semester I took a class called "Critical Listening" ...worth 1 credit... and kind of thought this Golden Ears stuff was for the birds, but after completing it with all the excercises, tests and such I'd have to say that for me personally it was of value. I quickly recognize problem frequen...

Re: Reverb in the mix

I'd be willing to guess that alot of the muddiness you refer too is from the reverb. Low end on reverb causes exactly that...muddy and boomy junk. Set up your FX send to your reveb--return to your chosen channels as your reveb return and roll off the low end maybe 180-250 hz and bring it up and see ...

Thanks Joel...but now I have another question for you...does that mean that a condenser mic that has no tube can be called a Fet?...thanks for your help...I'm just trying to settle a little squabble with a buddy on this issue.

Re: enough about gear: how bout PREPRODUCTION?

There are a few things that I like to do on the front side such as meeting the artist/group wherever they rehearse for a number of reasons... 1) I kind of want to get to know them a bit because my studio is in my home and I've had a couple of experiences with folks being a bit...how do you say....un...

Re: Need career advice from all of you that do this for a li

Just my opinion, but I think many people are letting themselves get down on the possibilities in the industry. It's a fact that today is surely not the best time to open a large format studio exclusively to record bands....heck the labels seem to be in a funk (name excuse here....) it's harder to ge...

Re: Opinions on the Yamaha NS10's

I wouldn't say that I'm a huge fan of the NS10s, but I guess that of all the monitors out there I've grown accustomed to them. It is most likely to me a case of nearly every room having them and in turn it has become easy for me to recognize how a mix will transfer to another system whether thats a ...

Re: Anyone have any experience with the Sony?

DMX R-100 is fun as all get out....routing is really easy....nice interface screen....beats things like the O2R .....they are too hard to get the eyes to work with......the automation is rather lame, but I like the sound of the onboard compressors....the gating is good.....plus you got delays wherev...
