Re: de-essing
the pencil just re-directs the wind from P's. so it won't help esses. and yes i find that different pre's can totally change the S's. but the big diference is the singer's themselves. some sound great on a tube mic. and some are very sibilent. i love the waves de-esser plugin. or one of the old DBX ...

Re: Two mics on a kit
i've recorded drums with one mic, and recorded some of the coolest sounds that way. with one good mic and a compressor you can get some great sounds. my favorite though is the 3 mic glyn johns technique. i think your on the right track with the two mics. the atm-25 on kick is a good idea. if you hav...

Re: Bogus Studio Tricks
the mixing in compressed tracks is not bogus. it actually works sometimes. one so called "trick" i heard of was to get just the attack from a 57 then edit out everything but the transient. and then edit out the attack from another mic farther away. someone told me what a great sound they got doing t...

mackie 8-bus console - mix bus dying on one side.
my trusty old mackie 8-bus started dropping on one side of the mix bus. the 8-buses still work perfectly fine. i have heard that this is happening to a ton of these consoles and mackie is offering free repairs on certain serials. unfortunately mine is not the right serial. anyone have any idea's on ...

Re: Saw Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers last night...
i think the situation of recording separate drums was this... they got a great room sound on the drums but the cymbals were too washy. (sound familiar?) so rick ruben and jim scott/david bianco said screw it we'll overdub the cymbals later. but they never did so the song (you don't know how it feels...

Re: Focusrite Penta: Opinons, Please
although it's the same pre as the pro tools control 24. it's kind of a crappy pre. but who cares, cause the compressor is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!! i can't tell you how much i use this thing. on the drum bus it's so good it's scary. i almost hate to tell people. cause it's my secret $350 weapon. i also wil...

Re: anyone used the event 20/20 bas monitors?
the 2020's are my home computer speakers and i love em for that. i really love the mackie HR824 powered monitors for the studio. but it's strange. at my place i love em. but at my friends studio (who owns the same speakers) i can't stand em. they sound so different to me. so much that i think they'r...

Re: Drums-Clear/Coated Heads?!?
i am really picky about drum heads. for me, the remo coated ambassador batter is the king for the studio. i personally HATE pinstripe heads. but i know a lot of people who love them. if you suck at tuning the pinstripe is more forgiving. as for the stevie wonder sound. no bottom heads on toms. and t...

the guy who did the first pretenders record. not the producer chris thomas... what's his name??? oh yeah Bill Price. great engineer. did the clash and sex pistols. steve lillywhite's pogues records we're kind of cool. but he did some cheese too. the talk talk- spirit of eden record is really organic...

Re: Yoshimi, Kid A, Sophmore Slump etc...
these are some of my favorite records. i would advise trying strange techniques like running keyboards through guitar petals and amps. lots of distant mic'ing with tons of compression. just trying whatever you think of, no matter how far from the standards of "proper" recording techniques. i've mic'...

Re: newbie with mic overheads question..
are you recording the drums and guitars with the same two mics? is it just a stereo recording of the drums and guitars? or are there also close mics involved? if not you might want to consider close micing the kick, then using your two dynamic shure mics in a glyn johns stereo drum setup which is......

Re: the best of the cheap condensers
my favorite cheap large condenser is the rode nt1000 this mic is a great deal at around $299. it's dead quiet, clear and present. i have two that i use all the time. i hear people really love the oktava 012 small condenser but i have a pair that i'm not that crazy about. i use them a lot less than m...

Re: Snare/ Mic ?????
how come every one's afraid to say it...... A 57!!!! for rock nothing comes close. now if your doing jazz a km84 or a large diapham condenser is cool. but for me a 57 on top and a large condenser facing the kick and bottom snare. i think it's much more natural than a mic right up on the bottom head....
