Re: Great Sounds with Limited Gear?
yeah, the "limited-time/limited-budget" quandry has actually led me to form a new methodology about "project" recording. Most of the bands I've played with tend to go for the bigger studio-thang, which works great as a musician because I learn a lot by watching great engineers work with great gear. ...

Re: I hate all the reverb plugs or hardware I have ever hear
this sorta ties in to something i was thinking about while trying to fall asleep last night - stereo vs. mono reverb. I did a record for a local band on a 1/2" 8 track - we were going for the "early indie" type of sound. we did drumes/git/bass on all 8, then did a bounce to 1/4" 2track, then back to...

Re: it was 24 years ago today
I love Wings. There, I said it. And I feel better. Seriously though, McCartney is one of the ultimate musicians in Rock. The guy can write and play in umpteen different styles, and if you had a catalog of say, a HUNDRED songs, you might have a few stinkers too, eh? Why the need to find the "worst be...

Re: DBX 463 noise gate
I just got a 163x compressor, have yet to try it out but I've seen them in a lot of the racks at "world-class" studios I've been in, and figured $36 ain't a lotta bread for a piece with some cred. Surely some of you have used them - what for? (I've heard snare somewhere). I'm in the process of track...

the bellari mp105 with the black lion mod gets used 'round here a good bit... way under $200.

Re: How often do you track without using any EQ?
When tracking acoustic instruments (but not necessarily drums) I definitely stay away from eq as anything more than a corrective measure for a less than ideal room situation. I think that's something that isn't really getting discussed here - eq is every project studio/home recordists best friend. B...

Re: Time stretching-phase problems
yeah, i guess odds are the computer just isn't capable of doing this - my question is more if there is a creative way to slow down the tempo without losing too much sound quality, or even slowing things down in a way that "sounds cool"? The time stretching effect can sound really neat on vocals, and...

Time stretching-phase problems
So I've got a multitrack drum file (PT LE - 9 tracks of drums) that I'd really like to slow down before tracking the rest of the instruments. I've got Pitch n' Time as an audiosuite plug, but when I time-stretch it to about 76% of the existing tempo (leaving the pitch locked in), it's like I threw a...

Re: Warmoth Products
I've got a strat, tele, and jazz bass, all made of mostly warmoth parts. every time i've been in a "bigger" studio, the engineers are all pretty blown away by them. true "player" guitars. the compound radius necks are really smooth to play, and the birdseye maple ones are really beautiful. like the ...

Re: Olivia Tremor Control recordings
I'm more thinking "Dusk at Cubist Castle", as it seems a little more sonically experimental. I think you're right re. casstete 4 track - sounds like a lot of bouncing down going on. I've spoken with Bill Doss a few times at shows in Atl., as well as some guys in the Gerbils that played on the record...

Olivia Tremor Control recordings
Love these guys and everything they did. Obviously a lot of different techniques across their catalog. I know some was 4-track, some was tracked to computer, I believe also a 8-track 1/2 inch might have been used. A bunch of the sounds, particularly drums seem to be modeled after psychedelic period ...

Re: Analog vs. Digital Debate: Over?
Edit: Sorry, this is a reply to bigtoe - Not saying that anyone is selling anything. I personally like analog way better as well, just finished the first session of a somewhat "retro-rock" album using a Studer 2" / vintage tube mics / outboard, etc., with loads of tape compression - sounds just like...

Re: Analog vs. Digital Debate: Over?
Getting any medium to sound good takes work - I think a lot of people who are doing "home recording" nowadays (me included) would love to have their equipment do the hard work of making tracks sound great. Honestly, performance, mic choice/placement, signal chain, and time are far more important tha...

Re: Didn't Mercury Rev Record on Film?
When is the new record due? I assume it is also w/ Friddman? I absolutely love every one of their records - I thought All is Dream totaly stands up with the rest of their catalog - great playing, great songs. The new one sounds interesting, as I definitely do miss the psychedelic aspects from the fi...
