Re: Hamptone gain block / mic preamp article
Get 3 Ammeters and play with one of the Pass diff pairs (or try Spice...2 JFETs or BJTs and a few resistors are chump change, but 3 meters with decent mA tracking aren't). You'll build some intuition by watching them together as you change the input voltages.

Re: Hamptone gain block / mic preamp article
I'd definitely be curious to see a schematic for a discrete opamp based on a couple JFETs. Here ya go: https://www.passdiy.com/projects/images/content/diyopamp7.png Or better yet, download the PDF and follow through as he iterates on the design: https://www.passdiy.com/download.php?download_file=/i...

Re: Hamptone gain block / mic preamp article
This has sort of come full circle here. At the TapeOp conference in New Orleans, there was a DIY breakout session. Most of the group was new to DIY, and was led through the construction of one of these gain stages by Scott H himself. There were a bunch of little baggies of parts that were distribute...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
I, too, have succumbed to the Behringer synth clone thing.
I stumbled across a used yellow TD-3-MO, so I have caught the fabled "Uli-fish."
(and, yes, make of that nickname what you will)

Well, you wouldn't want your podcast viewers to see the usual coathanger + old sock combo, would you?

So put the flats on the Gretsch? Seems like a potentially great combo.

Re: Gift card burning a hole in my pocket.
Thank you, Zombie Thread, for reminding me that I've still got this gift card.
A pandemic happened in there, and kinda rearranged priorities. I just checked, and it's miraculously still worth the original value!
No $50 Small Stone, but there's a $50 Small Clone...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....
The Fluke 115 is a great meter, but its their entry-level, general purpose electronics meter, to compete with some of the other high-quality import meters we see these days (Wavetek, Extech, UniT, and so on). I've had one for about 10 years now. Goes everywhere I need a portable meter. But I'd say t...

Re: Building a DIY plate
And a couple more thoughts since I wrote that: The Valhalla (and their Audiodamage cousins), UAD and SoundToys plates are all pretty good. There's a second set of DIY plate instructions floating around. I think it was written by Jim Cunningham (Mr Ecoplate), and it includes some better schematics fo...

Re: Building a DIY plate
I've built a number of plates through the years, and now have a Mk I Ecoplate (plus a loaner Brick Audio plate). I think the third video answers your question about boinginess/clankyness. If the thing goes "boing" or "clank" or "clunk" when you tap it (ie: excite it with an impulse), then it's going...

Re: Name 3 core mics
Considering things more by category, than by specific models: 1: If you sing, find a mic that sounds good on your voice, and learn to work it. If you sing, but always dislike how your voice is coming across, that's a miserable situation to be in. 1B: if you don't sing, find a mic that's flattering t...
