For me, never buy any audio gear new. No need to. There are plenty of sad sacks willing to let go their last purchase for a loss = your gain. I've always been hesitant to shop the used market for microphones, especially if sight unseen (Ebay). Would it be worth it to shop used for a microphone like...

002r chained to Apollo

Can anybody confirm, from experience, that the Digidesign 002r cannot be used as additional converters/preamps by being linked to another interface (like the UA APollo) via Lightpipe? The Apollo would be the device interfacing with Pro Tools. Will the 002r only function when its being used as the pr...

First, Nick and David are correct, but only to a degree. Don't carry debt if you can avoid it - compound interest is a bitch. But if you get perks on a credit card, and can pay it off right away, the risk is minimal. You just have to have the discipline to follow through on paying it off. I do it e...

Financing Strategies For Gear Acquisition

This may seem like a strange topic to broach, however I am about to spend a large sum of money on equipment and am wondering if there are any secrets, techniques, tactics or insights that other studio owners could share about maximizing spending budgets. Instead of paying for gear with cash, would i...

Adding External Attack Control to 2-Knob Keeley Compressor

The older two-knob Keeley compressor pedals did not have an external attack control, but instead had an internal trim pot for making adjustments. I'd like to wire an external potentiometer to control this parameter. Has anybody modded one of these two-knobs Keeley's before and know what value/type o...

We have a drip LA-2A (earlier opto board, I can't remember which revision) and a pair of the Redd 47s. They're all fantastic. Just be sure you're comfortable working with high voltage circuits! I've got an Opto4 on order! Marc, this will be my first high voltage build. I understand the basic safety...

Are there any other films, specifically about audio engineering, studios or legendary manufacturing companies, that would come as highly recommended?

Immediately I recall John Vanderslice's song: "Dear, Sarah Shu". I believe it's an acoustic guitar keyed by the hi-hat.

Guitar ID....calling all guitar nerds

Can anyone identify the make/model of this guitar (from these shitty screenshots)? http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/cetanorak/Picture4_zpse2b069b6.png http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/cetanorak/Picture3-1_zps763a78d4.png http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a229/cetanorak/Picture2-4_zpsacfb...

Yes, the instructions are well organized.

Honkyjonk, the BOM for the NV73 actually links to the same AudioMaintenance site to purchase a kit that includes the transformers. So it sounds as if this is a legit build to attempt.

NV73 Preamp - DIY Kit

Have any of you built or used one of these NV73 Kit Preamps??

I'm looking for a quality DIY preamp to build and came across the NV73 over on the GroupDIY site.

Novice question about metering

I'm preparing to calibrate an audio circuit and I need to input a 1K Sine wave at 0dBu = 0.775 VAC. I have an HP 400E AC Voltmeter with an analog, averaging (RMS) meter. I also have a Fluke 77 multimeter with an VAC function, that I imagine displays PPM. I have split an output signal from a Pro Tool...

Thank you for linking that document....it's exactly what I needed to see. Also, your point about the level output of the iPhone function generator apps is well taken. It took me a while to find a free generator app that actually had a dB-based output adjustment. I planned to hook it up to the AC Vol...
