One of the best recordings of myself I have heard (but don't have a copy of unfortunately) was when I played guitar in a spooky instrumental band - kinda like Fellini soundtrack stuff, with cello and a violin and a singer who just made vocal sounds without lyrics. We played in an underground parking...

i used to use the dial tone on a phone. Its an F.
I've tuned to this also. But : Most dial tones are a combo of 350 and 440 hertz. I've always listened to the 440 hertz, which is (about) an A.

I have some Mullards from 1977 that sound great and test fine so yeah, good tubes can last a long time. Tube vendors of course always tell you otherwise, but even *they* scrounge through electronics from the 40s and 50s looking for gold.

This instruction shows how you can double the delay time of your box just by stacking chips on top of each other, essentially making a 1024 into a 2048, etc. http://home.debitel.net/user/jhaible/jh_adm1020_loop.html I haven't tested this. I have a ADM 1024 with a 5 button footswitch! I have never fi...

If you live in a bigger city, you may have a folky or acoustic - only music store. Go there and try them all. Similarly, go to Guitar Center, they sometimes have a room dedicated to classical guitars. You have to let you ear choose for you - there's little valuable technical information on classical...

if it's got to be fender It doesn't at all - Yamaha, Agile, Rondo, aria, hamer, 60's 70's 80's, whatever! I know how to set up a guitar, but when parts are complete junk, no setup is really gonna help. That's why someone above said : "my MIM Strat is great! I replaced pickups, bridge, tuners...." W...

Please recommend a cheap strat with good pickups/whammy

I hate to ask cause I could research this myself (and will) but I've been so long out of the guitar market, but I have a new band forming and we need this: a cheap (like $2-300) stratocaster-style guitar. Main points should be: with a proper setup, it's intonation on the bridge is good enough for re...

The circuit is so simple, and there is very little difference between silver and blackface. More important is the bias, the input signal, the tubes, the speaker, and then the circuit differences, possibly in that order.

What's that story again about Thelonius trying out for Miles Davis' band, and they thought he was retarded because he just sat at the piano mumbling and playing little thingies with one hand
Miles himself said this story was "rumors and bullshit".

Stay away from Active pickups.

Beware of 5 string and 6 string experts.

SD Quarter pounders and Lollars are all good.

Think more about your fingers than your pickups, you'll go farther that way.

More than tubes, bias is most important. JJ el84s are good ones. Brands of tubes are meaningless for the most part, unless you're talking Mullard or something for "tone purists".
