Building a DIY plate

I know there was an article in the Tapeop mag about this some years ago. A kind soul over on the forum associated with Electrical Audio/Steve Albini's place, posted this video: https://cdm.link/2022/08/heres-a-diy-plate-reverb-hacked-out-of-ikea-parts-for-under-100/ It seems really cool and fun and ...

Re: I don't need another ribbon...or do I?

I have a pair of Cole's, but I started with a Cascade and an M160. The Cole's are among the more exciting gear acquisitions to put to use and hear results from. When I get mics like a 4038 there is definitely a financial process and some rationalization. I don't have tons of disposable income and my...

The all dynamic approach. I like it. Heil for some top, M88 for the muscle, and 635 for the mid heavy and Omni.

Re: Name 3 core mics

I already put in my $0.02 in the other thread but I realized I only talked about large diaphragm dynamics. Partly this is because they are good for everything and I don't love a sm57 on vocals. Part of it is it almost seems like a Shure is just around, like someone just left it in the practice space...

Re: Adding Outboard Gear to Digital Setup

There's probably 3-4 different answers to this, but here's my take. Buy 1-2 utility mics, unless you think you aren't going to do this again. A versatile ldc (or sdc) and dynamic could cover all bases, vocals included. I could record most things with an AT 4000 series condenser (4033, 4047, or 4050 ...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I finally got a second Josephson E22S. The unexpected versatility of the first motivated my long term savings plan to purchase another. The only mics on my want list besides a fet 47 reissue/copy! They really do the job well!! They really live up to the hype. They're fast but such a smooth top end ...

Re: My Massive Preamp Comparison

Okay, not a ton of chatter so I suppose I'll share a few of my takeaways. First I was struck by how little the preamps mattered overall. I can hear some differences both solo'd tracks and whole mix but they're more subtle than I predicted. In some cases the differences are clearer with solo'd tracks...

My Massive Preamp Comparison

What we have here is a semi-exhaustive preamp comparison. One song tracked front to back using Allen and Heath, Api, Chandler Germanium, Great River and Sytek preamps. https://soundcloud.com/trevor-mcmorris/sets/preamp-comparison?si=2a95418a5cab4dff999e4d157ea2853a&utm_source=clipboard&utm_medium=te...

Re: Y cable on top+bottom Tom mics

My experience is that I usually want to bottom head quieter than the top, so a 1:1 balance via a y-cable might not be ideal. That Radial deal is a well-thought-out solution. Or, in the schematic linked above, bump the bottom head resistors up a bit...470, 560, or 750 maybe. Perhaps not unlike the t...

Re: Latest gear you've acquired.....

I've decided that member vvv dominates the gear acquisition thread. His combo of GAS and an eye for bargains is unstoppable.

Re: Recording Vocal Tracks without headphones

I always made sure to keep the monitor volume the same so punches never sounded different. This would be very hard for me. I seem to adjust monitor levels compulsively without noticing. I do too, that's why I mentioned it. It's a common thing for me, hear something I'm not sure of, turn it up a tad...
