I was in-between consoles/studios at one point and I did buy an A&H console for a short while (before I went to a Neotek Series 1 then later to a D&R Orion). The A&H I had was the one with the stereo output tubes back in 2000? Anyways, I didn't notice much benefit, much like Aphex 107's with Tubesce...

As long as the cables I have aren't old and abused, I haven't had much of an issue.... other than length, shielding, and gauge. I like cables to be as short as possible. I have XLR cables that are all, respectively, 6 feet and 15 feet. I treat them all with extreme care, even though they get abused ...

A Twin is just such a 'hard' sounding amp and really would never reach the compressed mid-ranged majesty of a Vox, outside of changing the speakers, tubes and thusly, the entire circuitry. A Dynacomp at least gives you the compression and IMO the Dunlop re-issues even have a nice break-up, which is...

I bought a U47 tube BLUE refirb back in 97 and it started acting weird several years later. I called up BLUE and they fixed it for free, all I had to do was pay for shipping. It should also be mentioned the warranty was past due. I didn't whine or anything when I called them about repair, they were ...

Yeah, if it ain't broke (ooh, double meaning), don't fix it.

Re: Hamptone JFET and Tube difference...

this question is really for those of you that own or have experience with both Hamptone pre's...how much difference do you hear between them? I just finished the JFET kit and I love it so far. I have an RNP that I also like but I feel that although it is a different sounding pre, its not all that d...

Re: Charging to attend a mastering session?

So, a cd I engineered is being mastered this week, and I've been asked to attend the sessions by the artist. I'm wondering if it's ethical for me to charge for my time. On one hand, I'll have to take a day off of work, etc. On the other hand, mastering sessions have always been such great learning ...

Re: what to charge

Lets say I'm charging a band $150 a day for tracking. What do I charge for mixing when the band will not be present? Charge by the song? Or just a flat rate? I use to do alot of mixing for free but I'm getting sick of certain people wanting me to change the mix 10 freakin' times. I know it would be...

A good friend of mine was a studio manager in Los Angeles. I worked with her when I was running/assisting at Secret Sound. Anyhow, later on, as I began freelancing, I used to contact her at Royaltone Studios for some projects I had on the go. If the days were open, we were in for a good rate. It se...

My insurance company set up two policies, one for the building/equipment and one for liability. At one time I did write up a simple "contract" that a band member and/or guest engineer/producer would sign but it fell to the wayside after awhile (I just didn't care to do it any longer) I don't run my ...

Thanks for the reply bluesman, I appreciate it. Do you have a tape delay? If so, when you turn it on; does the pitch vary to the point of bieng out of tune for the first 45 mins or so? Whoa.... "for the first 45 MINUTES"? That doesn't sound right, especially with a SpaceEcho that's, at the most, 20...

like jmoose said... So yeah, the time I use sub/buss is when I need/want to combine several mics to one or two tracks. When I use direct outs it's each individual channel/mic going straight into a format machine. Either way is all good just as long as the integrity of that signal (either a combo of ...
