Cheap, Durable Headphones for Digital Music Lab

I work with teens in Philly, helping them learn production and composition skills. They treat the computers well, but the headphones are another story. They inevitably handle them roughly, grab them by the wires, etc. Anyone have good experience with a particular type/brand of headphones that are on...

my understanding of matched pairs is that they are engineered to work together in a balanced way, when using them with stereo micing techniques. Using them by themselves or on different things, the 'matchedness' of the mics won't benefit or harm the tone.

I'm with Rhythm Ranch.. the tone of the guitar just doesn't sit out in front of the acoustics. I'm guessing re-tracking isn't possible, but I'd try a different amp or guitar that has more body to it, possible a little more gain. If you can't rerecord, re-amping as another person suggested might be a...

if you guys aren't using much reverb and delay on the vocals, how do you get a good room sound? record in a good room?

I'd buy a board for my DAW for the pre's, but I do all my mixing in the box so other than some random re-amping, I don't use it for much else. I doubt the Mackie's preamps will be better than your Pro Tools pre's. I got an old Soundcraft to warm/roughen up my recordings.

I have the fat heads.. had good results using them on guitar, trumpet and sax. Drum OH's sound good but not as thrilling as I hoped.

Definitely adds more warmth to things. Got a stereo pair for $270 shipped, with a free cable tester. (use the make an offer option on their website)

are you using an interface, or just the soundcard that came with the computer with an outboard mixer? an interface should take care of latency issues.

my experiences mixing down from digital to 1/2 inch have been really good.. particularly with high end material such as cymbals.. it just made it sound more together and rounder -- I think it will vary from band to band, for the music I mixed down (indie/grungey stuff) it worked out well.

I'm busy trying to find ways to recoup my costs and expenses. To me, having a space to rehearse and record is a luxury. Not too expensive.. rent is $400 total, split between 4-6 people depending on who's in the band at the time, but I definitely see about $100 a month go down the drain in my persuit...

don't tie up your main rig! Install a simple audio program like garageband or cool edit pro / audacity on another machine that might be laying around.. maybe at home even. Since you're going cassette to digital and there's no overdubs or processing, you could even use a walkman plugged into a consum...

I've been trying harder to listen at lower volumes to mix rather than my usual loud mix, which made things come out more than they actually were at regular listening levels. What I didn't think about was cranking it here and there to get a better low end picture.. good idea! Our space needs room tre...

You guys are right on... I had way too much going on in the low end, but I wasn't hearing any of it. I think it has to do with the room and position of the desk. I used to mix in an 8 x 10 room that was able to produce good low end with cheap m-audio monitors. Now the room is a large warehouse space...

Mixing AFTER Automation

I've accepted this problem as one of the limitations to automation, but maybe I'm wrong (I hope!). When it comes time to mix music with different dynamics, automation becomes a necessity. So I'll set my volume paths in Logic 5.5 and things are going great. Then I realize later on that I want to brin...
