in regards to the tool records. i think the main reason is the differences in mastering style. modern records have been mastered louder and louder for years. undertow has a more classic rock balance. with modern mastering style the guitars (the more constant sound compared to the vocals and drums pe...

i wasn't really thinking of it that way. (as far as comparing it to other music) they were just a little under the guitars. i probly would compress the vox track a little. here's a good trick. turn your monitors down low. like really, really quiet. so you can barely hear the music. then listen caref...

in regards to the cpu hungry thing. izotope stuff does this i know. iZtrash used to suck up most of my horsepower (not a problem now that i've got a quad core but...) i took to using it to direct edit the track in question to a new track. keep the old one in case something goes wrong or you change y...

there are 4 plug-in's that came in the waves diamond bundle 5.0. x-click x-crackle x-hum x-noise i haven't had a chance (or a need, rather) to use them yet but, they look pretty nice and waves pretty much means quality. they look very frequency versatile. don't know how easy it would be to get those...

my money is on the joemeek bundle from bombfactory. it's eq is a simple channel strip eq with a sweepable mid and a makeup gain. totally transparent, very, very musical. i use it on any guitar/bass sometimes vocals. also in the bundle is the sc2 compressor very cool. i put it on almost every guitar ...

right on man. the thing i was hearing that made me think the guitars might need a cut is the occasional boom in the low end that seemed to correspond to the muted notes in the riff. it must be in the bass then, maybe some compression to keep those down the the level of the rest of the part. (or mayb...

i charge by the hour (same as tracking, for me) or really, by the day. i prefer by the day because it's the best of both worlds. it gives the band (and me) the feeling of not having to watch the clock so closely so the creativity doesn't get suffocated, but it also keeps it time based so how picky i...

not bad. i'm a right to guess the drums are from samples? it's hard to tell without having a solo button but i think the guitars may have some low freq in them that's fighting with the bass. try a hi pass filter on the guitars, say somewhere around 80-100? then if the bass still isn't clear i'd reco...

if you're still looking around check out my work at www.jntracks.com
all the tracks on there were mastered by me. (and all but one i mixed also. the song by "Cavender" was mixed by Mike Poorman at Strangeways Recording in Providence RI)

i could do this job for $200 flat rate.
