Re: "On kicks with different mics like ya do"
- M88 - bass cab. Historically always used an RE20, but historically also always had to add a hefty midrange boost to get heavy distorted bass to cut through, which I'm finding is not the case with the 88. Just sounds less cloudy. - Soyuz Bomblet - guitar cab - often alone as opposed to the usual ri...

Re: FET FEVER
Try to find a used Lawson FET47. Incredible mic. I haven't used the Neumann a ton of times, but the Lawson feels pretty much the same to me. So good on vocals, amps, etc. too.
I want to believe that the Warm stuff is cool, but I tried one of their 1073 things once and holy shit did it suck.

Re: Recording harmonica, never done it before, help!
I've only done it twice, but they were very different contexts. First time was a LDC up close, I think in omni, but possibly just cardioid. That was for a folk thing. More recently was a green bullet, carbon copy for slap, space echo slightly longer than slap, little combo amp blowing up. Sounds so ...

If you have Fabfilter Pro-Q, maybe record a bit of just the wet verb to a track, split to mono, put the plug on each and use the eq-match function, save preset and just stick that in the chain after your return? I imagine any parametric plugin can be tweaked to balance it out more. Slight difference...

Re: UAD Spark
I've been begrudgingly using it because I don't own a satellite and sometimes I need to mix away from my home-base and can't lug around my Apollo 16. It's been helpful, but I feel kinda dumb paying for it. If they release the ATR-102 for it, I'll feel better about it. I think it's cool for folks tha...

Re: Hot tips for recording a mandolin?
Mandolins, like all stringed instruments, have loud transients. It is important to use a recording chain that can capture those. Look at your mics, see their spec, use the one that is "fastest" at transient response. A SDC or LDC should do the trick. As to the mic preamplifier, same thing, try to u...

Re: My poor hears are getting old
My right ear is more sensitive to upper mid frequencies. Most likely from standing in front of a Marshall full stack for years (with ear plugs, but still). It affects where I pan certain things and sounds like clanking dishes or air breaks or loud beeping sounds make me want to die a little bit, but...

Re: I don't need another ribbon...or do I?
I just have an m160, and I'm torn between getting another one or getting an m130. I suppose the m130 would offer more options, but the two m160s might be nice for drums overheads. Then again, m260s on s jecklin disc in front of a kit is probably pretty sexy too. Haha, now I remember why I stopped r...

Clarence Kane does it too. I emailed him about it last year. Different ribbon but he said "I've had no complaints"

Re: My two-tone m160
It was about a 3-week round trip, not bad. And my job, including replacing the xlr input, was about $350. If you just need the ribbon motor done I’m sure it would be less. They replace all the guts now. You essentially are getting a brand new mic when you send it in for service. Apparently the diff...

Re: Building a DIY plate
oh well, in the meantime, I just put an EQ with the plate (to roll off some lows for sure). Has there been talk of a more fully featured version? I honestly think that the genius of it is how ridiculously simple it is. The built in HPF is usually good enough for me. I like to put the Echoboy Jr. in...

I bet you could get someone with CAD software to make a 3D-printable part for you. I could even print it for you. We have 2 3D printers at the library where I work.

Sadly, I've never been motivated enough to do the hard work of turning them into mics.
