i really like my m160's for this. i usually keep them set up like this with either or both my beta52 and 4047 front of kit and possibly an m201 in the general area of the snare. i've also had luck with fat heads, mk-012's and mismatched pairs of all the aforementioned mics.

tony, i find no fault with that approach. in my experience though, i usually find the sing style, timbre, desired effects, or even who sings on any particular song to vary too much for that to be my constant. i think that 90% you speak of also focuses on the beat. vocal and beat... fuck the actual m...

to touch on what subatomic pieces wrote: i often will do exactly as you say and change all that stuff, but not the drum mics. when i track (or hear) an album, i find i like at least one sonic character to remain constant throughout. i think keeping something constant makes an album sound more like a...

I've been getting really stoked on this abstraction called "presence". I feel like with a solid phase relationship, a nice well-tuned instrument, and any of several well-loved techniques you can get a starting place that can go about anywhere. It's like, if things sound real, and up-front you have ...

that song is fucking awesome!!! it's like rocket from the crypt playing with a dirgey bluegrass band with tom waits singing! (no offense to the singer if he doesn't like him... not everyone does.) but yeah, why is everything on the left side?? besides panning (and the relative volumes that it would ...
